PHILADELPHIA -- The Temple women's basketball team will open Philadelphia Big 5 play on Wednesday, hitting the road to play La Salle at 7:00 p.m.Â
The Owls are 1-0 after a season-opening victory over Florida at the Liacouras Center on Friday. Temple used a 16-0 run in the second quarter and halted a late Florida comeback to seal the win.Â
Against Florida, Temple's backcourt struck for 72 of the team's 97 points, led by junior Feyonda Fitzgerald who scored a career-high 32 points, while also adding five assists and three steals. Fitzgerald was named the Philadelphia Big 5 Player of the Week for her efforts, while also earning a nod on the American Athletic Conference Weekly Honor Roll.
Sophomores Tanaya Atkinson and Alliya Butts each netted 20 in the victory, with Butts also dishing out four assists. Senior Erica Covile scored 11 points, going 7-for-7 from the line, while also adding three assists and two steals. Sophomore Donnaizha Fountain led the Owls with nine boards from the guard position, while adding five points.Â
La Salle is 0-1 after opening the season with a tight 62-59 loss at the hands of Fairfield. In that contest, the Explorers trailed by as many as 20 points in the 3rd quarter before going on a 20-5 run that nearly saw them complete the comeback.
Micahya Owens, who led the Big 5 in scoring a year ago, had 20 points, going 8-for-22 from the floor and 4-of-6 from the line. Adreana Miller finished with 16 points, while Amy Griffin had 13, all coming in the second half. Jasmine Alston had a team-high 10 rebounds to go with four points and six assists.Â
Temple leads the all-time series against La Salle, 22-21, but have won six out of the last seven meetings with the Explorers. Temple won last season's match-up, 75-72, as Fitzgerald knocked down a career-high 29 points, including the go-ahead jumper with 34 seconds remaining.
Fitzgerald bolstered her stat line with six rebounds and a team-high five assists, also connecting on 4-of-7 from beyond the arc. Covile, who went 7-13 from the field, finished with 17 points and three blocks for Temple. Micahya Owens led all Explorers with 18 points, while Alicia Cropper notched 16 points, seven rebounds, and six assists for La Salle.
