Hall of Fame Coach Tina Sloan Green to be Honored with Lifetime Achievement Award

PHILADELPHIA – Comcast SportsNet and The March of Dimes have announced that Tina Sloan Green, co-founder of the Black Women in Sport Foundation, will be honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award at the 6th Annual Shining Star Awards on Tuesday, January 12 at the Hilton Philadelphia at Penn's Landing. Previous Lifetime Award recipients have been Ed Snider, Ed Rendell, Jimmy Murray, Sonny Hill and Andy Talley. Over the past five years, this event has raised over $1.2 million for the March of Dimes.
The gala dinner, hosted by Ron Burke, will honor Sloan Green for her extraordinary service to the Philadelphia sports community. Additionally, this spectacular event features awards presented by a player from the Phillies, Eagles, Flyers, 76ers and Union to outstanding children who symbolize the urgent mission of the March of Dimes.
Sloan Green co-founded the Black Women in Sport Foundation in 1992. Since assuming the helm of this thriving organization, she has worked to ensure that young underserved minority students gain full exposure to non-traditional sports. The foundation's ongoing mission is to provide healthy alternatives for at risk women and children and vigorously advocate for the inclusion and rights of women of color in all aspects of sport—from the field to the board room.
She was the head coach of the Temple University Women's Lacrosse Team from 1973-1992, and held the distinction of being the first African-American head coach in the history of women's intercollegiate lacrosse. During her 32-year career at Temple, she amassed a 207-62-4 career coaching record with a .758 career winning percentage—leading the Owls to three National Championships and 11 consecutive NCAA Final Four appearances.
In July of 2014, Sloan Green earned a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Philadelphia Sports Congress. The previous November, Sloan Green was inducted into the Philadelphia Sports Hall of Fame as part of Class X. She is also in the US Lacrosse Hall of Fame, Temple Hall of Fame, West Chester Hall of Fame and the Women's Sports Foundation Hall of Fame.
Tina's work off the field is equally impressive. As professor of Sport and Culture in Temple University's College of Education, she served as co-principal investor of "Sisters in Sports Science", an initiative funded by the National Science Foundation. Additionally, Tina served as director of Temple University's highly successful National Youth Sports Program (NYSP) for over a decade. She has authored two books, written several articles for publication and contributed enumerable hours practicing what she preaches—supporting the advancement of women of color in all areas of sport.
Tina currently holds the distinction of Professor Emeritus in the College of Education at Temple University.
"I am honored and blessed to be selected for such a prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award with such notable former honorees," said Sloan Green. "The March of Dimes mission, promoting healthy children, aligns with the mission of the Black Women in Sport Foundation. I hope my induction will inspire girls and women, especially girls and women of color to take advantage of educational opportunities, reach for the stars, and give back."

The Shining Star Awards will also honor six deserving children who have benefitted from the work of the March of Dimes. These children are spending time with players from Philly's five sports team for a day they will never forget. At the gala, they will be presented with their awards by the players, and a special video presentation will be shown which documents the child's remarkable life and their day with the athlete.
Those attending will have the opportunity to meet the honorees and bid on sports and entertainment packages, autographed memorabilia, hotel packages and once in a lifetime opportunities including the Shining Star Package featuring four VIP tickets to the five sports teams and behind the scenes experiences, plus autographed team jerseys.
Philadelphia is proud to be the home of one of five March of Dimes Prematurity Research Centers, a nationwide network bringing the best and brightest minds together to work and share information. The March of Dimes Prematurity Research Center at the University of Pennsylvania joins centers at Stanford University, the Ohio Collaborative, Washington University in St. Louis and the final center, a collaboration among the University of Chicago, Northwestern and Duke. These March of Dimes Centers are bringing together more than 300 scientists, researchers and physicians that are pioneering a brand new way of doing "team science", dedicated solely to examining, identifying and preventing the causes of preterm birth.
Funds raised at the 6th Annual Shining Star Awards benefitting the March of Dimes presented by Wanamaker Entertainment Group support the March of Dimes prenatal wellness programs, research grants, neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) family support programs, as well as advocacy efforts for stronger, healthier babies.
