11.23.15 | Women's Basketball
PHILADELPHIA -- The Temple women's basketball team heads to Connecticut on Tuesday, squaring off against Quinnipiac at 5:00 p.m. The 2-1 Owls are looking to bounce back from a loss to Rutgers on Sunday.Â
Temple opened the season with victories over Florida (97-91) and La Salle (77-48) before suffering its first defeat, a 61-51 loss at Rutgers. In that game, the Owls shot a season-low 25.4% from the field, but still managed to cut the deficit to just four points late in the fourth quarter. Despite 27 points, nine rebounds, and three assists from junior Feyonda Fitzgerald, the team was unable to complete the comeback.Â
Fitzgerald and sophomore Alliya Butts accounted for all but six of the team's points against the Scarlet Knights. Butts finished the afternoon with 18 points, while sophomore Donnaizha Fountain and senior Erica Covile combined for 11 rebounds in the loss.Â
Fitzgerald has been spectacular for the Owls this season, averaging 26.0 points, 7.0 rebounds, and 6.0 assists in three games. Butts also aids the offense, tallying 19.7 points per outing, while classmate Tanaya Atkinson is the only other Temple player averaging in double-figures, putting up 11.0 points per game. Junior Safiya Martin is averaging 6.3 rebounds per game, while leading the Owls with eight blocked shots this season.Â
Quinnipiac was 32-4 a season ago, including a perfect 20-0 in the MAAC. The Bobcats grabbed the MAAC Championship, but fell in the first round of the NCAA tournament. The team has rebuilt, despite losing all five starters from the 2014-15 squad, and has won two in a row after opening the season with a loss at Army West Point.
The Bobcats are coming off a 74-61 win against Holy Cross on Saturday. Adiliy Martucci netted a career-best 18 points in the victory, but Quinnipiac nearly let a 10-point lead slip away. Edel Thornton was the only other Bobcat in double-figures, scoring 10 points and adding five assists. Paula Strautmane and Katie Carrill led QU on the glass, eaching picking up seven rebounds.Â
On the season, Martucci, Sarah Shewan, and Brittany Martin all average around 11 points per game to lead the Bobcats' offense. Aryn McClure and Strautmane are Quinnipiac's top rebounders, each pulling down 7.0 boards per game. As a team, the Bobcats shoot 34.2% from the field, 25.0% from three-point range, and 67.5% from the free throw line.
Temple and Quinnipiac have met only once before, in the opening round of the 2012 WNIT. In that game, Temple came out on top, 75-60, as Shey Peddy scored 21 points, including the 1,000th of her career at Temple. Brittany Lewis finished with 11 points, 11 rebounds and a career-high nine assists, while Kristen McCarthy had 13 points and a game-high 12 rebounds. For the Bobcats, Samantha Guastella had 11 points and six rebounds off the bench, while Felicia Barron finished with 10 points including three from long range.
