Women’s Soccer Falls to UCF in Quarterfinal, 2-1
11.3.15 | Women's Soccer
DALLAS, Texas - A last minute push by the sixth-seeded Temple women's soccer offense wasn't enough to continue the Owls' season as they fell to the third-seed UCF Knights, 2-1 in the last American Athletic Conference Tournament quarterfinal game on Tuesday. Temple finished the season 12-7-1 overall, setting the program record for most wins in a season.
The Knights gained an early 1-0 lead over the Owls at the seven-minute mark, when Temple got a head on the ball and sent it in for an own goal.
Later in the 22nd minute, UCF's Carol Rodrigues was able to collect the ball after a series of headers and knocked it over towards teammate Ashley Spivey, who sent it straight back into the net.
In the second half, Temple dominated possession and goal scoring opportunities with a total of ten shots in the half. The Owls came close early in the second half when a beautiful shot from outside the box by junior Elaine Byerley seem destined for the bottom corner but instead hit the post and rebounded to safety.
After holding the Knights out of the net for the rest of the game, it was the Owls turn to score. In the 88th minute, a pass from redshirt-junior Gina DiTaranto allowed senior Kelly Farrell to breakaway up the field, going one-on-one with UCF's Vera Varis; Farrell was able to send the ball in from the top of the box for her conference-leading 13th goal.
While the season came to a close for the Owls, head coach Seamus O'Connor is still proud of the way that his team battled against the Knights and hopes the girls will hold their heads high after this historic season.
Overall, the Owls outshot the Knights, 14-13 with both teams pulling even with seven shots on goals. Freshman Jordan Nash added recorded five saves in the net. Temple finishes with allowing 20 goals this season, the least amount by a team in program history (previous record was 22 goals in 1995).

"I am a mix of emotions right now, so sad and yet so proud. We played a really good opponent tonight in UCF and our ladies gave an amazing performance," said O'Connor. "I am so sad that we could not get the result for our seniors but they should know that their time with this program will show that they will always be remembered as winners and they have changed this program forever."
