Women's Basketball Downs Bloomfield in Exhibition

PHILADELPHIA — The Temple women's basketball team used a 17-0 third-quarter run to put away Bloomfield College, 65-42, in an exhibition game on Saturday afternoon at McGonigle Hall. Junior Feyonda Fitzgerald led all players with 18 points, leading four Owls in double-figures on the day.
Fitzgerald connected on three from beyond-the-arc, while also tying a team-high with four steals. Sophomore Alliya Butts finished with 14 points and three steals, while senior Erica Covile had 13 points, five assists, five rebounds, and four steals. Sophomore Tanaya Atkinson had 12 points with four rebounds and two blocks, while junior Safiya Martin notched 11 rebounds, a game high.
Temple trailed by a slim margin through early part of the first stanza, but Butts knotted things at 5-5 with a three. Bloomfield pulled ahead again, taking a 9-7 lead, but Fitzgerald drained a three to give the Owls a 10-9 lead after the first quarter.
Temple created some breathing room in the second quarter, as Butts, Atkinson, and Fitzgerald all connected for the Owls to push the score to 16-13. Bloomfield tied it up, though, as a free throw made it 16-16 with 3:51 to play. Fountain then connected on her first points in cherry and white, draining a three that sparked an 8-2 run, putting the Owls up 24-18 with 1:01 to play. The teams traded buckets down the stretch, but Bloomfield's Tianna Smith hit a three at the buzzer to send it to the locker room, 26-23, in Temple's favor.
The Owls opened the third quarter with a pair of Butts free throws, pushing it to 28-23, but five unanswered points from Bloomfield tied the game at 28-28 with 8:34 left in the frame. Two minutes later, the game was again tied, this time at 32-32, but Temple began to heat up. The Owls manufactured a 13-0 run that took up over six minutes of play, closing out the half with 45-32 advantage. Fitzgerald scored five during the surge, while Covile added four.
Temple continued its scoring run into the fourth quarter, extending the lead to 17 (49-32) before Bloomfield added its first bucket in over nine minutes. The Bears were able to get the deficit to 13 points on an Ariel Wilson lay-up with 6:54 to play, but Temple ended the game on a 14-4 run, accounting for the 65-42 final.
The Owls open the 2015-16 season on Friday, November 13, hosting Florida at the Liacouras Center at 7:00 p.m.
