Ibrahim Takes Epee Title at Penn State Fencing Open; Largaespada Ties for Third in Foil

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. - Sophomore epeeist Safa Ibrahim came from behind in the championship bout at the 43rd annual Penn State Garret Open to take the win and lead the Owls on a successful Saturday in State College. Senior Fatima Largaespada was also a top finisher for Temple, tying for third in foil.
The Owls had two other finalists (top eight), also in foil, as senior Demi Antipas took sixth and junior Miranda Litzinger placed seventh. Senior Petra Khan finished ninth to lead the sabre squad.
Ibrahim went 14-1 in the three pool rounds before advancing through the round of 16 direct elimination bouts. She came from behind against Harvard's Shawn Wallace in the title bout, winning by a score of 15-13. Largaespada was a perfect 15-0 in the pool rounds, and narrowly lost 15-13 in the foil semifinals.
Overall, the Owls had 10 fencers advance through the pool rounds to the top 16. Senior Gloria Aguilar and freshman Blessing Olaode placed 12th and 16th for sabre, respectively. Junior Alexandra Keft and senior Jessica Hall were 15th and 16th in epee, and sophomore Becca Stanford placed 15th in foil.
"It was really good meet for us," said Temple head coach Nikki Franke. "This was a very strong tournament and to get four in the foil top 16, three in epee and three in sabre is great. There were a lot of top 10 teams here. This is just a continuation of the kind of results we had last week at our Temple Open which shows consistency, and we could really see the improvement the girls are making."
The Owls will be back in action in two weeks, participating in the Elite Invitational hosted by Penn on Saturday, Nov. 21.
