PHILADELPHIA - The Maxwell Football Club and presenting partner Philadelphia Insurance Companies announced today that Temple University head coach Matt Rhule has been selected as the winner of the Club's 18th Tri-State Coach of the Year.
In 2015, Rhule has led his team to a 10-win regular season and an American Athletic East division trophy. The Owls started the season a program-best 7-0, and were ranked in the Top 25 for the first time in 36 seasons. In 2015, for the first time in 73 years, the Owls beat Penn State. Ten Owls earned 2015 all-conference honors and senior linebacker Tyler Matakevich won the Bednarik and Nagurski Awards, while also being named a finalist for the Lott IMPACT and Senior CLASS Awards. Rhule was also a finalist for the Eddie Robinson Award and a semifinalist for the George Munger Award – each given annually to the nation's best college football coach.
Rhule, a State College, PA, native and a former player at Penn State, has 18 years of collegiate coaching experience, including nine seasons at Temple. He began his coaching career as a volunteer assistant at Penn State and also had stops at Albright, Buffalo, UCLA and Western Carolina before joining the Temple program as an assistant in 2006. Rhule spent the 2012 season with the New York Giants before returning to Temple as head coach in 2013. He has participated in seven bowl games – three as a coach with the Owls.
