Soccer All-American Ben McLaughlin To Be Inducted Into Philadelphia Sports Hall of Fame

PHILADELPHIA - One of the greatest men's soccer players in Temple University history, Ben McLaughlin, will be inducted into the Philadelphia Sports Hall of Fame, it was announced today at a media conference held at the Sheraton Society Hill.  McLaughlin, and the entire Class of 2015, will be formally inducted on November 12.

McLaughlin, who was inducted into the Temple Athletics Hall of Fame in 1979, earned All-American honors in 1946 when he helped spark the Owls to an unbeaten season. A member of the National Soccer Hall of Fame (1977), he was played for the 1948 United States Olympic Team that competed in England, Ireland and Norway. 

McLaughlin played with the 1949 US National Team, which qualified in Mexico to compete in the 1950 World Cup in Brazil. During his career, he represented the US and/or the American Soccer League against Mexico, Cuba, Haiti, Israel, England, Scotland, Ireland, Iceland, Canada and Italy. 

A professional player with the Philadelphia Nationals of the American Soccer League, he helped his team to four ASL titles and earned league MVP honors in 1952.  

Regarded as one of the greatest soccer players of his era, he was a product of the famed Lighthouse Boys Club of Kensington.
