Men's Soccer Heads to City Rival Villanova for Midweek Matchup

PHILADELPHIA – In search of its fourth consecutive win, Temple men's soccer is set to face city rival Villanova Wednesday afternoon at 4 p.m. at the Higgins Sports Complex.

The Owls remain undefeated in 2015, boasting a 4-0-1 record that ranks first in the American Athletic Conference. They have also been ranked No. 23 in the nation in the NSCAA National Poll. They added a third shutout for the season in a 2-0 defeat over Yale on Sunday. Jorge Gomez Sanchez led the way, knocking in both goals for the day.

Registering four goals and one assist to total nine points in the past week, Gomez Sanchez has earned himself numerous weekly honors. He was named Offensive Player of the Week by the American Athletic Conference, Player of the Week in the Philadelphia Soccer Six, and the ECAC DI Offensive Player of the Week. In the national scope, Gomez Sanchez ranks first in the nation for shots per game with 6.40. He also holds top-five spots in goals per game, points per game, total goals, total points, and shots on goal per game.

Three other Owls earned weekly honors with Alex Cagle being named Goalkeeper of the Week for the third consecutive week by the American Athletic Conference, and Jordan Wix-Rauch earning a spot on the weekly honor roll. Brendon Creed was named the Soccer Six Defensive Player of the Week.

The Wildcats are coming off their first loss of the season against Monmouth on Sept. 12. The team now stands at 3-1-0 on the season. Junior Padraic McCullaugh leads the Wildcats with four goals and two assists for a total of 10 points through four matches.

The Owls last met the Wildcats in Sept., 2013 when Temple topped Villanova 1-0. Wednesday's match will be the 35th matchup between the two teams. The Owls leads the series 21-10-3.
