Giddings to Serve as a Temporary Coach for Women’s Rowing

PHILADELPHIA -- Dr. Amy Giddings, a nationally-recognized rower and coach, will join the Temple women's rowing staff as a temporary assistant coach for the fall semester. She will serve in the position while Head Coach Rebecca Smith Grzybowski completes a maternity leave.
"I am thrilled to bring Amy on board for the fall season," said Grzybowski. "As a passionate educator, coach and alumni, Amy is a great resource for our athletes as we maximize our fall training and lay the groundwork for another successful spring season."
Giddings holds a pair of Temple degrees, a Master's in Sport and Recreation Administration and a Ph.D. in Sport Psychology. She currently serves as Assistant Professor of Sport Management at Drexel University, a post she will continue to hold throughout her time with the Owls.
"I am a Temple alum and I owe my professional success to Temple University, Temple Athletics, the rowers and coaches of the men's and women's teams, and the faculty of Temple's programs," said Giddings. "I would not be where I am today without the support of the Temple community and I am happy to give back."
A two-time U.S. National Champion, Giddings' rowing resume is impressive. She finished in the top-10 at the World Indoor Rowing Championships in 2000 and was part of the women's senior four boat that captured the title at the prestigious Royal Canadian Henley in 2002. Giddings' boats finished in the top-three at the U.S. National Championships on three occasions, and she was also part of three Head of the Charles Regatta victories.
Giddings began her rowing career at the University of Dayton, where she served as team captain for the Flyers, while receiving her undergraduate degree in political science and religious studies. Upon graduation, she joined the Temple rowing team as a graduate student. With the Owls, she was named the team captain for the 1999-2000 season and was also the 2000 MVP.
"I am very excited about what Coach Grzybowski is doing with Temple women's rowing," said Giddings. "As an alum of the program, it is wonderful to see the impact she has made in such a short period of time and I am really happy to step in and cover for her to maintain the momentum."
Building on her success as a rower, Giddings has coached the sport for over 13 years at the scholastic, collegiate, and elite levels. She and her husband, Paul Coomes, were instrumental in creating the rowing program at Conestoga High School, where Giddings served as novice coach from 2001 until 2010 and Coomes was head coach of the club for over 15 years.
Giddings has guided her crews to countless city, state, and national medals. Most recently, both her girls' and boys' novice four boats captured first place at the 2010 Interscholastic Sculling Championships. Giddings' boats have also nabbed 11 Philadelphia City Championships.
Temple women's rowing will compete in three events this fall, opening the season at the Navy Day Regatta on October 10.
