Kickin' It with Hermann Doerner and Carlos Moros Gracia
9.2.15 | Men's Soccer
Throughout the 2015 season, two men's soccer student-athletes will be featured in our "Kickin' It" series of player features each week. This week we will get to know newcomers Hermann Doerner and Carlos Moros Gracia.
Where are you originally from, and what is your past playing experience with soccer before Temple?
Doerner: I'm from a city called Bad Nauheim which is next to Frankfurt. I played for the biggest club in Frankfurt, Eintracht Frankfurt, for the past five years. I also played four games for the Youth National Team of Germany.
Moros Gracia: I am from Spain. I played in Valencia C.F. for 13 years. For the last three years I have been playing for Saguntino. I have also played with notable players Juan Bernat (Bayern Munchen) and Paco Alcacer (Valencia C.F.), both international with Spain.
Â
What made you decide to attend Temple and compete with the men's soccer program?
Doerner: Â I wanted to play soccer and study at the same time. Temple is as a big university in a beautiful and very interesting city. The coaches are also great so it was easy to decide.
Moros Gracia: Some Division I universities offered me the possibility to play in the NCAA. I also had good offers in Spain, but finally Brian convinced me to come here. I would like to be a professional player in MLS.
Â
What do you enjoy most about being a Temple student-athlete? What's the biggest challenge?
Doerner: The biggest challenge is definitely that I have soccer and schoolwork at the same time, while English is not my native language. That makes it a lot more difficult, but I knew that when I came here and I like it.
Moros Gracia: The professionalism and care the staff has with athletes.
Â
What do you enjoy doing in your spare time away from soccer?
Doerner: Â I spend a lot of time with my teammates. I like hanging out with them, they are very cool.
Moros Gracia: Friends, travel and practicing other sports.
Â
Favorite pump-up song to listen to before a game?
Doerner: I do not have a favorite one, but there are a couple of songs that I like.
Moros Gracia: I like to listen to Estopa, a Spanish group.
Â
Do you have any pre-game rituals/superstitions?
Doerner: Actually no. I try to stay very concentrated.
Moros Gracia: I only think that my family is with me and it gives me a lot of energy.
Â
Who is the funniest member of the men's soccer team?
Doerner: Actually I laugh with everyone, but maybe Dalton. He does a lot of funny things and everybody laughs with him.
Moros Gracia: We have a lot. Dalton, Tarek, Joonas, Jorge, Hermann, Justin, Mahoney, and Stefan. We are joking around all the time.
Â
What is your most memorable moment so far in your Temple soccer career?
Doerner: My career is three weeks old so not much has happened, but probably our 3-0 win over Lafayette. It was my first game and we did a very good job.
Moros Gracia: I am new. I will tell you when I finish the season.
Â
Who do you look up to as a role model in your life?
Doerner: My father. He and my mother support me in everything I do. He achieved so many things that I also want to achieve and I learned a lot because of the tips that he gave me.
Moros Gracia: My dad, mom and sister.
Â
Favorite place to eat on road trips?
Doerner: My teammates told me that we will always eat at Jimmy John's and I love that place.
Moros Gracia: Olive Garden.
Â
Favorite Movie/TV Show?
Doerner: Prison Break.
Moros Gracia: Gladiator and 300.
Â
Favorite professional soccer team and player?
Doerner:Â My favorite team is definitely Eintracht Frankfurt. My favorite player is Xavi Hernandez, he is also my role model because I want to play the way he does.
Moros Gracia: I like Valencia C.F. and Atletico Saguntino. My favorite player is Lionel Messi.
Â
What are you most looking forward to this season?
Doerner: That we have a very good team and I would like to win the conference so we can get into the NCAA tournament, because we are working very hard as a team each day.
Moros Gracia: I hope to have a great season as a team, focus on our goals and get far. I think we are limitless if we play like a team.
Â
What is the one thing you can't live without?
Doerner: Family, Friends and Soccer. I have been playing since I was four years old and that's one of the most important things in my life.
Moros Gracia: Soccer. I think it has brought me many good things. Of course my family and friends, as well.
Â
If you were stranded on an island, which teammate would you call to help you?
Doerner: Mark Grasela, because I lived with him for a week when I arrived here. He helped me a lot, looked after me and showed me a lot of things.
Moros Gracia: None of them, they definitely wouldn't help me survive.
Â
If you didn't play soccer, what would be your next sport?
Doerner: Ice hockey. I used to play it in a club when I was young and my father took me to every game of our hometown team.
Moros Gracia: I think I would only ever play soccer.
