Temple Travels to Cincinnati for Conference Showdown
9.7.15 | Football
This Week
The Owls travel to Cincinnati for the American Athletic Conference opener against the Cincinnati Bearcats. This will be the conference's first game under its new two-division format. Both teams compete in the East Division, where the regular season champion will face the West Division champion in the inaugural American Championship game on Saturday, December 5th.Â
In the American's East division, there may be no greater anticipated match-up than the Bearcats' offense against the Owls defense. Both teams heavily populate the first and second all-conference preseason teams. Kiel will face a ferocious pass rush that recorded 10 sacks at Penn State, leading the FBS and establishing a new American record.Â
The Last Time
The two teams played last season at Lincoln Financial Field on Thanksgiving weekend. Despite the emotion of Senior Day for the Owls, the Bearcats capitalized on turnovers and took a 14-6 victory. The Owls managed to keep one of the conference's top offenses to a season-low in points (14) and yards (255). Despite near-freezing conditions, Temple quarterback P.J. Walker out-passed his counterpart Gunner Kiel 196-174 in yards during the afternoon, with neither throwing a pick. However, a Walker fumble led to Kiel's short TD to Mekale McKay for the lone passing TD of the game. Austin Jones converted two field goals in the red zone but later missed a third that could've kept the game closer.
The two teams meet for the fourth straight season as conference foes, dating back to the Owls' return to the Big East conference in 2012. This will be the 18th overall meeting in the series, led by the Owls at 9-7-1. Temple has played the Bearcats the most of any conference opponents and their nine wins in the series is also the most amongst American rivals.
Up Next
Following the Cincinnati game, Temple will play their next two games on the road, travelling to UMass and Charlotte before returning to Philadelphia to face Tulane fro Homecoming on October 10th.
