1.16.16 | Men's Tennis
RICHMOND, Va. – To kick off the spring season, the Temple men's tennis split a set of matches at the VCU 4+1 Invitational on Saturday.
In their first match of the day, the Owls were defeated by the Belmont University Bruins, 4-1. Belmont's Cedric Dacjacquier took down Temple's Nicolas Paulus at the first flight, 6-3, 6-3, while the doubles team of Bruno Russo and Stephen Goldman edged out Santiago Canete and Artem Kapshuk, 6-1, 3-6, 6-4.
The Bruins followed up with second flight win, as Robin Demasse defeated Vineet Naran, 6-2, 6-3. Temple looked to fight back at the third flight, but Ian Glessing ultimately fell to Adam Rudowski, 4-6, 6-4, 10-8. The Owls only win came at the fourth flight, as Uladzimir Dorash defeated Zak Khan, 3-6, 6-2, 11-9.
In their second match of the day, the Owls rebounded to take down the Richmond Spiders, 3-2. The Spiders clinched the doubles point, as Jonathan Quenard and Alexandre Felisa defeated Naran and Hicham Belkssir, 7-6 (4), 6-1.
In singles, the Owls and Spiders battled until the final flight. At the second flight, Kapshuk defeated Canyon Teague, 6-2, 6-4, while Canete fell to Jacob Dunbar, 6-2, 7-5 at the first flight. Freshman Florian Mayer picked up his first Temple victory at the fourth flight, after taking down Brice Polender, 2-6, 6-4, 6-3. Filip Stipcic took on Caleb Tory at the third flight, clinching the win for Temple with a 7-5, 3-6, 6-4 set.
In their first action back since the ITA Atlantic Regional Championship in October, head coach Steve Mauro was overall pleased with his squad's performance on the day.
"We started out slow against Belmont; the guys were a little tight getting back into the swing of the things. Things just didn't go our way, even though there were a lot of close matches," said Mauro. "I'm really happy with the way we rebounded against a really strong Richmond team. Everyone played well, I'm happy that Mayer had his first collegiate win, and it was a strong performance by Stipcic to clinch the win for us."
The men's team will return home to Philadelphia to continue the spring season at the City Six Invite on Thursday, January 21 against La Salle. The match will take place at Legacy Tennis Center at 8:00 a.m.
