Men's Basketball takes on La Salle Wednesday in Big 5 Anniversary Doubleheader

1.18.16 | Men's Basketball

PHILADELPHIA - Temple men's basketball will take part in a rare Philadelphia Big 5 Doubleheader Wednesday when the Owls play La Salle (7:00 pm./CBS SportsNetwork/1210 AM WPHT).  The doubleheader will serve as the setting for a 60th Anniversary celebration of city-series play as players from all five schools representing six decades of competition will be in attendance.

Saint Joseph's will play Penn in the second half of the doubleheader.

HEADLINES
• For Temple head coach Fran Dunphy, this game will mark the 34th time he has coached against his alma mater. Dunphy is 26-7 all-time against the Explorers, with a 13-3 record while at Temple.
• Temple and La Salle are playing at the Palestra for a third season in a row after not doing so previously since 1989.
• The Owls are coming off a thrilling, double-overtime win against Cincinnati, 67-65. Senior Quenton DeCosey scored a game-high 22 points, while senior Devin Coleman came off the bench for 15 points, all from long range.
• Temple has won three of its last four, with the only loss coming in a narrow, 67-65 defeat at Memphis in the final seconds. The Owls tied the game on a Josh Brown layup with two seconds left, but a foul on the next possession sent the Tigers to the free throw line.
• This season marks the first since 1998 that the Owls have beaten two Top 25 opponents on the road (#22/23 Cincinnati on Dec. 29, #23/24 UConn on Jan. 5).
• Senior Jaylen Bond recorded his fifth double-double of the season with 14 points and a season-high 14 rebounds at Memphis, while Brown led the Owls with a season-high 15 points along with seven assists.
• DeCosey led Temple with 24 points in a 78-60 win vs. East Carolina on Jan. 9, which saw the Owls make a 21-4 run in the second half. Temple made a season-best 13 three-pointers, with DeCosey and Coleman hitting five apiece.
• The Owls' 55-53 win at #23/24 UConn on Jan. 5 was the 200th win for head coach Fran Dunphy in his 10 seasons at Temple. He is now one of just five Division I coaches with 200 or more wins at two different schools, while also taking each school to six or more NCAA Tournaments.
• With 512 wins, Dunphy is just five wins away from surpassing former Owl coach John Chaney and becoming the all-time winningest coach in Philadelphia Big 5 history.
• For the ninth season in a row, Temple has at least one victory over a Top 25 team.
• Temple hit a season-high 30 free throws (30-of-38, 78.9 percent) in its win against Delaware State on Dec. 19, with DeCosey making 12-of-15 and Brown hitting a perfect 8-of-8. DeCosey recorded his third career double-double in the victory, adding a career-high 12 rebounds to a team-best 20 points.
• As a team, the Owls are ranked second in the nation in fewest turnovers per game at 9.4. They have recorded single digit turnovers in nine of 16 games, tallying as few as five (vs. Delaware on 11/29).
• DeCosey is Temple's leading scorer this season with 15.8 points per game, ranking fourth in the American Athletic Conference, and has scored in double figures in 14 of 16 contests. He has scored 1,240 points to rank 36th all-time in program history
• La Salle has lost two in a row and nine of its last 10 games. The lone win came at home on Jan. 9 against #25 Dayton, 61-57. Two of the Explorers losses have been to #9 Villanova and #13 Miami.
• Three players average in double figures in scoring for La Salle, led by redshirt junior guard Jordan Price who ranks 13th in the nation at 21.9 ppg.
