Men's Basketball Takes Down La Salle, 62-49 in Palestra Big 5 Doubleheader
1.20.16 | Men's Basketball
PHILADELPHIA (Palestra) - In the front end of a Philadelphia Big 5 doubleheader at the historic Palestra, Temple men's basketball defeated city rival La Salle 62-49. The Owls' 10th win of the season was rarely in doubt, and was earned with 50 percent shooting from the field to tie their season best.
Temple improved to 10-7 overall and 2-1 in the Big 5, while La Salle falls to 5-11 and has yet to win a city game this season at 0-3.
Josh Brown and Quenton DeCosey scored 12 points apiece to lead the Owls, shooting 5-of-8 and 4-of-8 from the field, respectively. Temple had nine scorers in the game, while the Explorers used only one player off the bench in the entire contest.
Leading 14-12 six minutes into the first half, Temple used an 11-2 run to take its first double-digit lead, 25-14 on a Brown jumper at 8:20. The Explorers then got a single bucket before the Owls held them scoreless for nearly another four minutes, taking their largest lead of 15 points, 31-16 just past the five-minute mark.
During that stretch, Temple forced five turnovers by La Salle (seven overall in the half), while the Owls committed just three and shot close to 54 percent from the field in the first period.
Temple's final shooting percentage was despite the Owls going 1-for-5 to close out the period. Their 15-point lead was whittled to eight at the half by the Explorers, who scored nine of the final 11 points, and Temple took only a 33-25 lead into halftime.
Making just his second career start, freshman Trey Lowe hit 3-of-6 field goals and led Temple with eight points at the break.
The second half was a game of runs early on, first for La Salle as they kept the momentum going with a 7-0 run to start the period. The Owls' lead was down to just a point, 33-32, before they used an 8-0 run of their own to bring it back to nine. The run later turned into a 15-3 spurt, giving Temple a 13-point, 48-35 lead near the midway point.
La Salle again cut into Temple's advantage, getting within as few as seven on a three-pointer with just under four minutes remaining, but the Owls closed the game on an 8-2 run with four points apiece from Brown and Devin Coleman.
Temple forced 12 turnovers overall while committing just six, and held the Explorers to 34 percent shooting. La Salle's Jordan Price, who came into the game ranked 13th in the nation with 21.9 points per game, was held to just 11 points on 4-of-21 shooting by the Owls' defense.
Temple will face its sixth Top 25 team of the season in its next game, an 8 p.m. contest against #8 SMU set for Saturday, Jan. 23 (ESPNU / 1210 AM WPHT).
