1.31.16 | Women's Fencing

SOUTH BEND, Ind. - On the second and final day of the Northwestern Duals, the 10th-ranked Temple fencing team went 4-2 to finish at 8-4 for the weekend. For the season, the Owls are now 18-8 with two dual meets remaining.

As on day one, Temple's only losses were to teams ranked above them in the national poll. The first match of the day ended in a 16-11 loss for the Owls to #2 Notre Dame, and they later lost by the same score against #3 Princeton.

Temple recorded two sweeps on Sunday, winning 27-0 against both Detroit and Cleveland State. They also dominated Lawrence by a score of 26-1, and edged out UC San Diego 14-13. Both the foil and epee squads got wins over top-10 opponents, with foil beating #3 Princeton 8-1 and epee pulling out a 5-4 win over #2 Notre Dame.

Returning to action for the epee squad after sitting out Saturday with an ankle injury was sophomore Safa Ibrahim. She promptly started the day with a 3-0 record against #2 Notre Dame as well as 3-0 against UC San Diego, and finished at 8-3 overall.

Senior Petra Khan of the sabre squad went 2-1 against #2 Notre Dame, and repeated that effort against #3 Princeton and against UC San Diego, finishing at 6-3 overall.

Sophomore Becca Stanford was a leader for the foil squad, going a perfect 3-0 vs. #3 Princeton and recording a 2-1 effort against #2 Notre Dame. She finished at 7-2 for the day after also going 2-1 against UC San Diego. Fellow foilist and junior Miranda Litzinger went 8-1 overall, while freshman Auset Muhammad went 7-0.

For the epee squad, in addition to Ibraham's success, head coach Nikki Franke highlighted the performance of freshmen Quinn Duwelius and Fiona Fong who both went 5-0.

The epee squad earned a 7-2 win over UC San Diego, helping the Owls win that match by one point overall. Ibrahim was 3-0, while senior Jessica Hall and junior Alexandra Keft each went 2-1.

"We fought really hard in the Notre Dame and Princeton matches," said Franke. "The epee score against Princeton is not indicitive of how close the match was. We were able to do really well against all the other teams and with two good days of fencing under our belts, we are better prepared for the postseason."

Next up for the Owls is at meet at Duke on Sunday, Feb. 7.
