Women's Basketball Wins Big Over Tulsa

1.8.16 | Women's Basketball

PHILADELPHIA — The Temple women's basketball team used an 18-2 run between the first and second quarters to open a large lead over visiting Tulsa, finishing with a 66-46 victory over the Hurricane. The win, the 150th of her career for head coach Tonya Cardoza, improved Temple to 9-5 overall, 3-1 in The American, while Tulsa dipped to 5-10, 2-2 in conference play.

10 different Owls found the scoring column, led by 10 points from sophomore Alliya Butts. Junior Feyonda Fitzgerald and sophomore Donnaizha Fountain each added nine points, while sophomore Tanaya Atkinson had eight points and eight rebounds. Graduate Ugo Nwaigwe again hit career highs with eight points, nine rebounds, and five blocks, while Ruth Sherrill also notched a season-best, scoring seven points.

Tulsa led by five early, as Clark connected for a three, making it 9-4 with 6:01 on the clock. Temple battled back to tie the game twice, at 9-9, and 12-12, before closing the half on a 9-2 run. The Owls' surge included threes from Fountain and Butts, making it a 21-14 game after one.

Temple continued its run into the second quarter, scoring the first six points of the frame to make it 27-14. Tulsa sandwiched its only two points of the frame between a Sherrill jumper, making it 29-16, but the Owls scored seven unanswered to head to the locker room with a 36-18 lead.

At the break, eight different Temple players got into the scoring column led by seven each from Butts and Fountain. Nwaigwe tallied five first-half blocks to lead an Owl defense that held Tulsa to 25% (8-32) from the field.

Temple and Tulsa traded the first 18 points of the final frame, with each team netting nine through the first five minutes. The Hurricane used a 6-2 run to get the lead to 20 points (64-44), but Temple's lead was too much to overcome, as the Owls finished out the 66-46 win.

Temple returns to action on short rest, as the Owls welcome Cincinnati to McGonigle Hall on Sunday at 2:00 p.m.
