10.10.16 | Men's Soccer
PROVIDENCE, R.I. / PHILADELPHIA – Following a 2-0 week for the Owls that included their first conference win, two shutouts and first victory over SMU, Temple men's soccer has picked up six different weekly honors from the Philadelphia Soccer Six and American Athletic Conference.
For the second week in a row, goalkeeper Alex Cagle was named Goalkeeper and Defensive Player of the Week by the conference and Soccer Six, respectively. Cagle posted 11 total saves on the week and fourth consecutive shutout. The shutout mark is now one short of matching the Owls' all-time record for single-season consecutive shutouts.
Cagle's goals against average also stands at 0.58, which, if held, would take over the first-place spot for single-season goals against average in program history. The average is also tied for first place in the conference with UConn goalkeeper Scott Levene.
The nation's leading goal scorer, Jorge Gomez Sanchez also picked up a pair of player of the week honors. He shares the title in both the conference and Soccer Six with Kwame Awuah of UConn on the conference side and Matt Crawford of Saint Joseph's on the Soccer Six side.
Gomez Sanchez tallied two game-winning goals on the week, marking his 11th and 12th goals of the season. He has now tallied 25 career goals and sits in seventh place all-time for career scoring in Temple's program history through nearly two seasons of play. Gomez Sanchez is also one goal short of tying his single-season goal mark of 13 goals from 2015.
Freshman Zach Brown picked up his first career honor, earning the Rookie of the Week title from the Philadelphia Soccer Six after tabbing his first career start and full game against Villanova. He also subbed in during the Owls' match against SMU and log 38 minutes. The midfielder played a crucial role in helping the Owls tally their fourth consecutive shutout.
Senior captain Matt Mahoney also received accolades from the conference. He was placed on the weekly honor roll after tallying his second assist of the season in the Owls' first ever victory over SMU. Recently adjusting to a switch in position, Mahoney was able to let off two shots against Memphis while continuing to help a strong Temple backline to their roll of shutouts.
