PHILADELPHIA – For the third year in a row, Temple Athletics was noted as a participant in the Ronald McDonald House (RMH) "Show Your Stripes" campaign. Spearheaded by the Compliance and Student-Athlete Affairs Office, student-athletes and staff supported the Ronald McDonald House through purchasing socks, ties, or scarves and sporting them in photos on social media with the hashtag #showyourstripes.

In 2015, Temple Athletics had only 60 total participants. This year, the department rallied 163 participants, nearly tripling last year's total. The 2016 "Show Your Stripes" participants include the Resnick Academic Support Center, women's lacrosse, women's soccer, women's rowing, gymnastics, track & field, field hockey, men's cross country, golf, the men's basketball coaching staff, the Compliance and Student-Athlete Affairs Office, as well as a host of athletics administrators and other staff members.

"We have teams that have volunteered in the past at the Ronald McDonald House locations in Philadelphia on their own," said compliance and student-athlete affairs coordinator Jessica Gray. "We wanted to get involved because the Ronald McDonald House locations are local and we knew we had an opportunity to make a great impact for the families that use its resources."

The Ronald McDonald House was founded in 1974. Co-Founder, Dr. Audrey Evans, was working as a pediatric oncologist at The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia and saw the need for families to have a supportive place to stay while their children were in treatment; she had a vision for a home away from home, similar to a YMCA. The Philadelphia RMH supports families of seriously ill children by creating a community of comfort and hope.

The organization started the "Show Your Stripes" campaign in 2014 in honor of its 40th birthday. The premise was to sell red and white striped socks and encourage purchasers to wear their socks in a selfie and post it on social media using the designated hashtag to raise a money and awareness for the two Philadelphia locations. Today, the Philadelphia Ronald McDonald House has expanded its offering to socks, ties, scarves and t-shirts for participants to show their support.

"You never know when you or someone else you know may have to take advantage of the Ronald McDonald House resources," said Gray. "Temple Athletics was able to support in a simple way and use the power of our social media presence to raise awareness. Overall it was a great experience."

Temple Athletics hopes to continue increasing its number of participants in the Show Your Stripes campaign for years to come.
