Temple Travels to Memphis for Nationally Televised Conference Showdown
10.3.16 | Football
Temple takes to the road for its first American Conference road matchup of the season, battling West Division foe Memphis after a short week of rest. The game is scheduled for Thursday, October 6, at 8:00 p.m. ET (7:00 p.m. CT) and will air on ESPN and 97.5 The Fanatic, Temple football's flagship radio station. The Owls (3-2, 1-0 American) enter the matchup following a dominant victory in their conference opener against SMU, defeating the Mustangs by a sound 45-20 mark. Meanwhile, Memphis (3-1, 0-0 American) dropped its first loss of the season Saturday in a tough road test at No. 16 Ole Miss, falling 48-28. Taking into consideration last week's impressive ground performance, Temple has created a deadly one-two punch between the likes of senior RB Jahad Thomas and sophomore RB Ryquell Armstead. Thomas, who notched two scores and 80 yards against SMU, jumped to third all-time on the school's career touchdown list. Armstead, on the other hand, led the Owls with a career-high 159 yards and two touchdowns of his own. Together, the pair head an offense averaging 350.2 yards and 34.2 points per game. On the other side of the ball, the Temple defense has been relentless, posting the nation's No. 20 defense in yards allowed (319.4 ypg). The unit will face a high-powered Memphis team under the direction of first-year head coach Mike Norvell and junior QB Riley Ferguson, who have created the No. 6 scoring offense nationally, generating 45.8 points per game.
LAST WEEK
Serving up a second consecutive victory, Temple surged past American Conference visitor SMU 45-20 on Saturday afternoon at Lincoln Financial Field. For the most part, the Owls' offensive proficiency came from their stable of running backs, as senior Jahad Thomas and sophomore Ryquell Armstead found the endzone two times each, combining for 239 yards on the ground. Senior QB Phillip Walker threw for 124 yards and a single score as well. The defense, however, was the true story of the win, holding a high-octane Mustang offense to just two offensive scores and 288 total yards. Sophomore DB Delvon Randall led the team with a career-best 10 tackles, senior DL Haason Reddick notched two strip sacks, while both senior DB Nate L. Smith and sophomore LB Chapelle Russell contributed seven tackles.
LAST TIME
Last season's late November battle between Temple and visiting Memphis featured a battle, as the Owls were able to pull away with a 17-point fourth quarter to seal the victory. Current Owls with major contributions included then-junior QB Phillip Walker, who compiled 261 passing yards and two touchdowns, and then-freshman RB David Hood, who added a team-high 61 yards on 14 carries for one score.
UP NEXT
Following the Thursday night matchup against Memphis, the Owls will prepare for a second consecutive conference road game, first heading to Orlando to face UCF in their third-straight American Conference test.
