PHILADELPHIA- The Burlsworth Trophy and the Springdale (AR) Rotary Club announced the 52 players nominated from Division 1 (FBS) schools from across the country for the 2016 Burlsworth Trophy. In the award's seventh year, the Trophy is named in honor of Brandon Burlsworth, former University of Arkansas Walk-On and All-American offensive lineman.Â
"This is the seventh year of the Burlsworth Trophy and once again we have a very strong group of nominees" said Marty Burlsworth, CEO and founder of the Burlsworth Foundation and older brother of Brandon. "All of these young men have worked extremely hard and have overcome tremendous obstacles to become the players they are today."
Temple's redshirt senior defensive lineman Haason Reddick is on the Burlsworth Trophy list, given every year to the most outstanding player that began their collegiate career as a walk-on. Reddick first got to campus in 2012, after growing up in Camden, N.J., and playing football at Haddon Heights High School. Initially a cornerback, he then transitioned to linebacker, and finally defensive end where he has become a natural pass rusher for the Owls. He has become dominant on the field, terrorizing opposing quarterbacks week in and week out, while also blossoming into a critical leader in the locker room.
Over the first nine weeks of the season, Reddick has accounted for 38 total tackles, 16.5 of which are TFLs, as well as 7.5 sacks. For his career to date, Reddick has 40 TFLs, recently passing Tyler Matakevich to become second all-time in school history. He is also the record holder for most TFLs in American Athletic Conference history.Â
