First Road Game Takes Men's Basketball to Former Rival UMass on Thursday

11.16.16 | Men's Basketball

PHILADELPHIA - Temple men's basketball's first road game of the season will take the Owls to former conference rival UMass for a 7 p.m. game on Thursday, Nov. 14 (TCN / 1210 AM WPHT). The Minutemen (1-1) and the Owls (1-1) have a long history together as members of the Atlantic 10 Conference for 31 years.

Temple leads UMass 44-22 in the all-time series, with a slight, 16-15 advantage in games played at UMass. The Minutemen won the last meeting, 79-74 in the A-10 Tournament Quarterfinals at Barclays Center on March 15, 2013. Overall, Temple has won six of the last nine games in the series, and 15 of the last 22.

The rivalry was a heated one in Temple's last two years in the A-10, with a pair of overtime games (both wins for the Owls) and just five points on average separating the scores in the final five games between UMass and Temple.

Temple is 1-1 after two home games to open the season, suffering a low-scoring, 57-52 loss vs. New Hampshire on Nov. 14 after a high-scoring, 97-92 win in its season opener against Philadelphia Big 5 rival La Salle on Nov. 11.

Junior Obi Enechionyia has scored 20 points in both contests to lead Temple and rank fifth in the American at 20.0 ppg. Six Owls scored in double figures against La Salle for the first time since 2002, with three earning career highs in points led by Daniel Dingle's career and team-high 21 points. Enechionyia and Ernest Aflakpui both recorded double-doubles, the second for Enechionyia and first for Aflakpui. Freshman Quinton Rose was named the American's Rookie of the Week after scoring 12 points off the bench in his debut.

The Minutemen returned just a single starter from last year's 14-18 team that ended its season in the A-10 quarterfinals. Junior guard Donte Clark is the team's leading returning scorer after ranking third last season with 16.1 points per game, and was a 2016 Preseason All-Conference Third Team selection. UMass has a young roster with six freshmen and just one senior, who is a walk-on for the Minutemen.

UMass won its season opener 90-76 against UMass Lowell before suffering a close, 90-88 loss at Ole Miss. Five players are averaging double figures in scoring after those two contests, led by freshman guard Luwane Pipkins at 16 points per game. The second-leading scorer (14.5 ppg) and the team leader in assists (6.5 apg) is freshman guard DeJon Jarreau.
