Women's Rowing Represents Cherry & White at PurpleStride

PHILADELPHIA -- The Temple women's rowing team kept with program tradition, participating in the recent PurpleStride Philadelphia 5K. The event raises money for pancreatic cancer research, and this year the event has raised over $729,000.

"When you have a group of 50+ women, you have a lot of people power," said captain Emilie Mehler. "It feels good to put our strength in numbers to show support for members of this community that have become a part of our team."

Temple's participation in PurpleStride dates back to 2009, as a team tradition honoring former Owl Laura Altimari '09, whose mother passed away from the disease. Current members of the Owl team have also had family members affected by the disease.

"Participating in Purple Stride has become a tradition and it is important to our team because we are supporting alumni and TUWR supporters who are close to the cause," added captain Lea Millio.

It is estimated that more than 46,000 Americans will be diagnosed with pancreatic cancer this year, and more than 39,000 will die from the disease. It is the fourth leading cause of cancer death, with a relative five-year survival rate of just 6%, the lowest rate of any major cancer.
