STATE COLLEGE, Pa. - Freshman Malia Hee continued her strong debut season in impressive fashion for Temple fencing, taking first place in sabre at the 2016 Garret Penn State Open on Saturday. Hee was one of four top-10 finishers for the Owls, including freshman Kerry Plunkett who tied for third in sabre.

After Hee and Plunkett both advanced to the semifinals, Hee edged Penn State's Teodora Kakhiani 15-14 to make it to the finals. The championship bout matched the intensity of the semifinals, and Hee again won 15-14 against Penn's Victoria Zhang.

"We saw a lot of heart through a lot of bouts today," said assistant coach/sabre coach Josh Herring. "Malia was down in the final bout and came back to win the last two touches. We just showed a lot of perseverance and Temple toughness today."

Junior Safa Ibrahim took fifth place in epee, while freshman Kennedy Lovelace placed ninth in foil.

"This was a very strong competition," said head coach Dr. Nikki Franke, "and for us to have finalists in all three weapons was very good. Malia fenced very, very well today, and so did Kerry. This was a nice way to finish before fall break, and then we'll regroup and come back ready for our next meet in December."

Temple will compete next at the Sacred Heart Invitational on Sunday, Dec. 4.
