Fencing Finishes 4-2 at Penn's Elite Invitational; Owls Within a Point of Two Top Teams
11.5.16 | Women's Fencing
PHILADELPHIA - In its first dual meets of the 2016-17 season, Temple fencing went 4-2 at the Elite Invitational and nearly toppled two of the top programs in the nation. The Owls' losses were by one point each, to defending national champion Columbia and to last year's third-place team in the nation, Notre Dame.
"I think this meet helped our girls realize how close we are to being where we want to be," said Temple head coach Dr. Nikki Franke. "To do that well against some of these schools is hopefully motivation for them to continue to work hard because we're right there. We wanted to put everyone on notice that we are contenders, and I think we did that today."
After the 14-13 Notre Dame loss in the first round of the day, Temple defeated Cornell 20-7 and beat Yale 15-12. The Owls again lost 14-13 to Columbia, but rebounded for a 21-6 win against Johns Hopkins and a 20-7 win over NJIT.
The sabre squad scored a 6-3 win against Notre Dame and the epee squad won by the same score against Columbia. The sabre squad posted the day's best overall record, going 5-1.
Leading Temple individually was freshman Malia Hee of the sabre squad with a record of 13-2. Hee was a perfect 3-0 against both Notre Dame and Johns Hopkins while going 2-1 vs. Columbia. Teammate and fellow freshman Kerry Plunkett also recorded double figures in wins, going 11-4 overall.
Junior Becca Stanford led the foil squad with a 9-3 mark, including a 2-1 record against Notre Dame, while freshman Alexa Prasher was also impressive overall at 9-4.
Sophomore Quinn Duwelius posted the best record for epee at 8-2, while junior Safa Ibrahim went 6-3.
"I was pleased with how much improvement I've already seen from the beginning of the year to now," said Franke. "This was a very strong meet for us so early in the year. We faced some very tough opponents and the girls really rose to the occasion. They were very focused and they really applied things we've been working on for the last couple weeks which was very good to see."
Temple will send some individuals to the November NAC from Nov. 11-14, and will compete again as an entire team at the Penn State Open (an individual meet) on Saturday, Nov. 19.
