Men's Basketball Closes out Non-Conference Slate vs. Yale on Thursday
12.20.16 | Men's Basketball
PHILADELPHIA - Temple men's basketball finishes out non-conference play with a home game against Yale (6-4) on Thursday, Dec. 22 at 7 p.m. (ESPNU / 1210 AM WPHT). The contest marks just the second-ever meeting between the schools, with Yale winning that game over 100 years ago, 15-3 in 1897-98.
All eight players in the game scored for the Owls (8-4) in their most recent contest, a 68-63 win vs. NJIT on Dec. 17. Free throws were the difference-maker as Temple hit 15-of-18 compared to just 2-of-3 for the Highlanders.
Junior Obi Enechionyia scored a team-best 13 points in the NJIT win. He leads Temple and ranks fifth in The American with 17.3 ppg. Enechionyia scored in double figures in all but one game, and tied his career high for a second time this season with 26 points in a win at Saint Joseph's on Nov. 30. Sophomore guard Shizz Alston, Jr. leads the American and ranks sixth in NCAA Division I with an assist/turnover ratio of 4.7 while also ranking second in the league with 1.8 steals per game.
The American Athletic Conference schedule begins for the Owls at home on Dec. 28 in a 9 p.m. contest against No. 24/23 Cincinnati. Temple was picked to finish sixth of 11 teams for the third straight season, but has consistently improved upon that pick each year, last year winning the conference's regular-season title with a record of 14-4.
Yale has won four straight after starting the season 2-4. Most recently, the Bulldogs beat Central Connecticut State 90-59 and Delaware 81-63. The Bulldogs are coming off a 23-7 season that saw them win their first-ever NCAA Tournament game in the first round against Baylor. Yale lost some key players from that squad to graduation, and lost 2016 Ivy League First Team pick Makai Mason to a season-ending injury in early November.
Leading Yale so far this year is sophomore guard Alex Copeland with 14.5 ppg and freshman guard Miye Oni with 6.9 rpg to go with 12.0 ppg.
With 190 wins in his 17 years as the head coach at Penn, Temple head coach Fran Dunphy ranks second all-time in Ivy victories as a head coach in the league. Longtime Princeton coach Pete Carril tops the list with 310 wins. Since arriving at Temple in 2006, Dunphy has amassed an additional nine wins against Penn, putting his total at 199 wins against Ivy League schools. The Owls' only Ivy League opponent apart from Penn since Dunphy has been head coach at Temple was Cornell in the NCAA First Round in 2010, a 78-65 loss.
