Free Throws Lift Men's Basketball to 83-77 Win Against Yale

12.22.16 | Men's Basketball

PHILADELPHIA - With its most impressive performance at the free throw line in four years, 28-for-30, Temple men's basketball held off Yale (6-5) for an 83-77 win at the Liacouras Center. Freshman Alani Moore II had a career night, scoring 26 points including 10-of-11 free throws to lead four players in double figures for the Owls (9-4).

Daniel Dingle was a perfect 9-of-9 at the stripe on his way to 19 points, and Shizz Alston, Jr. hit 5-of-6 free throws along with 3-of-6 three-pointers for 16 points. Alston had an all-around strong game, also dishing a career-high seven assists, blocking a career-high three shots and coming up with three steals.

The Owls made their first 23 free throws before finally missing two in the last 40 seconds of the game. Temple's 93.3 percent free-throw shooting was its best since hitting a perfect 10-of-10 against St. Bonaventure on Jan. 19, 2013.

Temple never trailed in the contest, but Yale whittled a 13-point Temple lead early in the second half down to four points in the final 20 seconds. Alston and Quinton Rose (11 points) combined for 4-of-4 free throws in those final seconds to hold off the Bulldogs.

Sam Downey was one of three players to score a team-high 15 points for Yale, but made it a double-double with an impressive game-high 17 rebounds. The Bulldogs held their own at the stripe, hitting 16-of-19 for the game.

Moore hit the first four of his attempts from behind the arc in the first half, and the Owls got a fifth early three-pointer from Obi Enechionyia. Moore's fourth trey gave Temple its first 10-point lead, 17-7 at 13:06.

Yale picked up some momentum for a 9-0 run that got the Bulldogs within a point, but the Owls responded with a 9-1 run of their own, capped by Alston with Temple's sixth three-pointer of the half. The Owls matched their 10-point advantage with 3:05 left on a Dingle layup, and they still led by seven at the break, 35-28.

With 15 points at halftime, Moore led all players and was just three away from his career high. He finished the half shooting 5-of-7 from the field while also hitting his only free throw attempt.

Dingle and Alston combined for a trio of three-pointers and 11 total points to give Temple its largest lead of 13 points early in the second half, 48-35 with 15:25 remaining.

An 8-0 run for Yale got the Bulldogs back within five, 48-43 at 12:37, but it was as close as they would get until near the final minute.

After a couple of scoreless minutes for both teams, Rose followed a layup with a dunk to get Temple going again. Alston's third trey of the game put the Owls' lead back in double digits, 57-46 with 6:43 left, and they matched that 11-point lead twice more, the second time just under the three-minute mark.

Yale chipped away and made it a five-point game, 73-68 on a Miye Oni three-pointer with 1:20 left. Moore and Mark Williams each hit a pair of free throws to put the lead back at nine with under a minute remaining, but the Bulldogs took advantage of Temple fouls as well. They hit four straight free throws and followed them with an Alex Copeland trey to cut the margin to four, 79-75 with 22 seconds to go.

After Alston made 2-of-2, Yale's Jordan Bruner hit a layup and the Bulldogs fouled Rose, who also hit both his attempts with 13 seconds left. Copeland missed a final three-point attempt and Alston corralled the rebound before running out the clock.

Temple will open American Athletic Conference play at home next week, taking on No. 24/23 Cincinnati at 9 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 28 (ESPNU / 1210 AM WPHT).
