Women's Basketball Heads to Hampton for Wednesday Tip

PHILADELPHIA -- The Temple women's basketball team will travel to Hampton for a mid-week match-up, playing at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday at the Convocation Center. The 4-2 Owls will be looking for their second-straight victory, after topping Vermont at home on Sunday.

SCOUTING THE OWLS
The Owls rebounded from a loss on the road at Harvard with a win over Vermont at home on Sunday. The victory improved Temple to 4-2 on the season. 

Temple has four players contributing 14 or more points per game, led by senior Feyonda Fitzgerald, who is averaging 17.0 points, 6.8 assists, and 5.0 rebounds per contest. Juniors Alliya Butts (15.8 ppg), Tanaya Atkinson (15.2 ppg), and Donnaizha Fountain (14.0 ppg) all aid the Temple offense, which has averaged 72.3 points per game. Butts leads the team with 16 steals on the season, while Atkinson (7.8 rpg) and Fountain (7.0 rpg) top the Owls on the glass.

Freshman Shantay Taylor has played her way into the starting line-up this season, averaging 3.7 points and 3.5 rebounds per outing, while junior Khadijah Berger contributes 5.0 points and 3.5 boards per game.

The Owls are shooting 38.4% from the field and 33.6% from three-point range, and have forced an average of 17.5 turnovers per contest.

LAST TIME OUT
Temple allowed a season-low 39 points, picking up a 54-39 victory over visiting Vermont on Sunday. The Catamounts shot just 27.5% (14-51) in the game, while Temple forced a season-high 23 total turnovers.  The Owls nabbed over half of their points (27) from the bench, and also held a slim 41-38 edge on the glass.

Butts and Fountain tied for game-high honors with 16 points and three steals each, with Fountain contributing a team-high nine rebounds. Fitzgerald filled out her stat line with six points, seven assists, five boards, and a pair of steals. Senior Ruth Sherrill chipped in with four points and six rebounds, while Taylor notched four points with five boards. 

SCOUTING HAMPTON
The Pirates are 3-5 on the season, but have won three out of their last four games. Before a loss to JMU, Hampton went 3-1 at the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame Women's Challenge, falling to #4/3 South Carolina, but topping Saint Peter's, Maine, and Lafayette. 

Malia Tate-DeFreitas leads the Hampton offense to the tune of 18.1 points per game. The only Pirate averaging in double-figures, she is current fifth all-time in scoring in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference with 2,084 career points.

Elsewhere, Hampton has seen Monna Finney-Smith (7.8 ppg), Kaylah Lupoe (6.8 ppg), and Jephany Brown (6.1) all average over 6.0 points per game. Lupoe leads Hampton on the boards with 7.0 rebounds per game, with Brown chipping in with 5.5 per game. 

The Pirates average 53.8 points per game, shooting 30.6% from the field and 26.0% from three-point range. Opponents have out-rebounded Hampton on the season by a 11.0 margin. 

LAST TIME OUT
DeFreitas and Lupoe each recorded double-doubles for Hampton on Friday night, but the Pirates fell 71-50 on the road at James Madison. 

Tate-DeFreitas finished with 18 points and 10 rebounds, while Lupoe added 17 and 12 boards to lead Hampton. Jephany Brown was next with eight points and a season-high three blocked shots. As a team, Hampton was 17-of-63 from the floor (27.0%), 2-of-11 from 3-point range (18.2%) and 14-of-27 from the line (51.9%). 

TEMPLE VS. THE PIRATES
Temple leads the all-time series with Hampton, 4-0. The Owls and Pirates last met on December 8, 2009 with Temple grabbing a 54-51 win on the road.
