PHILADELPHIA- Temple University football players FB Nick Sharga, and OL Brendan McGowan were both recognized as 2016 Philly-SIDA Academic All-Area Honors recipients. Philly-SIDA selects 24 athletes from nine local schools that excel on and off the field.

Nick Sharga, a senior from Cherryville Pa, is a back-to-back Academic All-Area selection. He received this honor his Sophomore year during the 2015 season and again this past season. Sharga will be receiving his degree in Risk Management in the Spring. He leads the Owls team with a 3.86 GPA. Sharga is also a standout on the field. He wears the number 4 because he was voted on by teammates to wear the honored single-digit jersey, awarded to the toughest players on the team.

Brendan McGowan, a senior from Hazelton Pa, received his degree in finance last Spring and is currently enrolled as a graduate student. In 2016, McGowan was a semifinalist for NFF Campbell Award, was on the Rimington Award Watch List, and the Wuerffel Award Watch List. McGowan has been a crucial member of the Owl's offense being part of a 2016 Offensive Line that helped  running backs Jahad Thomas and Ryquell Armstead  become the only duo in the nation to rush for 900+ and 13+ touchdowns each.

This year Temple had two players selected out of 24 honorees. The other eight schools with players selected are; Villanova, Penn, Delaware Valley, Rowan, West Chester, Widener, Ursinus, and Lincoln.
