Track & Field Travels to Boston University for David Hemery Valentine Invitational
2.11.16 | Women's Track and Field
PHILADELPHIA – Following an extremely successful weekend at the Villanova Invitational, Temple women's track and field returns with a road trip to Boston University for the David Hemery Valentine Invitational. The two-day meet begins on Friday, Feb. 12, with the Owls kicking off the day with the long jump at 1:30 p.m.
Throughout the two days of competition, the Owls will be featured in 13 different events, including two relays.
Freshman Sylvia Wilson had an impressive meet last weekend where she broke the school's 60-meter dash and 60-meter hurdles records. Wilson was the only Owl to qualify for the finals in the 60-meter dash following her 7.59-second run in the preliminaries to set the new record. In the 60-meter hurdles, Wilson bested her own time for the fourth consecutive meet and logged an 8.51 in the finals to place second. She will be running both events again on Friday.
Senior Jimmia McCluskey and junior Bionca St. Fleur topped the pack in the long jump last weekend and now look to kick off this weekend's events with more top finishes.
This weekend's meet will also see the first indoor performance from graduate student Blanca Fernandez in 2016. Last indoor season, Fernandez represented the Owls at the NCAA Indoor Championships and earned NCAA All-America Second Team honors after finishing 12th overall in the mile. She was also named Most Outstanding Performer by the American Athletic Conference after winning both the mile and 3,000-meter run. Fernandez will be running in both of those events, along with the distance medley relay, on Friday night.
Fellow distance runner, freshman Brigit Andersson, showed big improvement in her personal-best time for the 800-meter run last weekend. Her time of 2:20.94 was a four-second improvement that placed her 19th overall.
The distance medley relay will be the only event for the Owls on day two of competition at Boston University. The event is set for 10:30 a.m.
