Fencing to Honor Seniors at Temple Invitational Saturday

2.19.16 | Women's Fencing

PHILADELPHIA - Six outstanding senior student-athletes will be honored at Temple fencing's Temple Invitational, set for Saturday, Feb. 20 in McGonigle Hall. The Senior Day ceremony will begin around 9 a.m., with the meet scheduled to run from 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. For the first time, Temple will be live streaming all of its matches Saturday on OwlsTV. Temple student Ed LeFurge will be on the call along with D.C. Pixie Roane, a 1997 Temple graduate and current club coach.

Tenth-ranked Temple will face four teams on Saturday, including two others ranked in the Top 10. The Owls will start the day against #3 Princeton at 9:30 a.m., followed by Brown at 11 a.m. After a short break for lunch, the Owls will fence #9 Penn at 1 p.m. and then finish the day against #7 St. John's at 2:30 p.m.

The group of seniors is a big one for the Owls this year, and will be sorely missed. Temple head coach Nikki Franke said honoring them will be a mixed blessing. "It's great to see them getting to this point and knowing they're ready to move on and start their careers, but it's a strong group and it's a group full of leadership. We're really going to miss them."

Princeton is the only team the Owls will be facing for a second time this season, after losing 16-11 to the third-ranked Tigers at the Northwestern Duals on Jan. 31. Temple would have faced Penn on Jan. 23, but that meet was postponed to this coming Sunday, Feb. 21. The Owls are still heading across town to Penn on Sunday, but will now face just #5 Northwestern, FDU and Cornell, making it a total of four matches against ranked teams in two days.

"Everyone is going to work hard and it's going to be tough, but that's what we want," said Franke. "We want strong competition, and that's going to make us fence our best. We're looking forward to finishing out the dual meet season with our best effort."
