Tenth-Ranked Fencing Faces Three Top Teams; Goes 1-3 at Temple Invitational

2.20.16 | Women's Fencing

PHILADELPHIA - Facing four tough teams including three ranked above them in the Top 10, tenth-ranked Temple fencing went 1-3 at its own Temple Invitational on Saturday. It was an emotional day for the Owls, who honored six seniors competing in their final home meet before the matches began.

After a 16-11 loss to #3 Princeton, Temple rebounded with a 19-8 win against Brown. In the afternoon session, the Owls suffered 15-12 losses to both #9 Penn and #7 St. John's.

The epee squad earned a 5-4 win against #9 Penn, while the foil squad had an impressive 6-3 result against #7 St. John's.

"We knew it would be a very tough day," said Temple head coach Nikki Franke. "I was pleased with the effort that the girls put out. We needed to adjust sooner to be more successful, and we needed to stay confident as the day went on. Those are both things we'll have to improve on tomorrow."

For the foil squad, junior Miranda Litzinger was a standout with an overall record of 7-2. She went 3-0 against Brown, and had positive records of 2-1 against both #9 Penn and #7 St. John's. Teammate and freshman Auset Muhammad also went 2-1 against St. John's, including a win over First Team All-American Marta Hausman.

Sophomore Safa Ibrahim had the best record of the day, going 9-3 for the epee squad. She was a perfect 3-0 against #9 Penn and also went 3-0 against Brown. She finished 2-1 against #3 Princeton.

For the sabre squad, junior Victoria Suber finished at 5-4 overall and went undefeated at 3-0 against Brown.

Temple will return to action on Sunday at the Penn Invitational, a meet postponed from January. The Owls will fence FDU, Cornell and #5 Northwestern.
