Lacrosse Cruises to 17-4 Win Against UC Davis

2.21.16 | Women's Lacrosse

PHILADELPHIA - With seven straight goals in a nine-minute stretch of the first half, Temple lacrosse put the game out of reach of UC Davis (1-1) early on before eventually winning 17-4 on Sunday afternoon. Seniors Brenda McDermott and Megan Tiernan both notched hat tricks for the Owls (2-1), while senior Rachel Schwaab added three assists to a pair of goals for five total points to lead all players.

Over Temple's last two games, the Owls have now outscored their opponents 30-6. Nine different players scored for Temple in today's win, matching the same total of goal-scorers from the Owls' 13-2 win against La Salle earlier in the week.

"I was really thrilled with every aspect of our game," said Temple head coach Bonnie Rosen. "Offensively, to see so many different contributors today, is exactly what we work on day in and day out. We don't want to have just one or two threats. Even today when we had Brenda and Rachel holding the ball quite a bit and they showed they can score, we also can use them to open up other people. We're trying to become a multi-threat team and I think we showed that a lot today."

While Temple's offense stole the show for much of the game, the defense wasn't without its own tests. Rosen credited her defenders for making quick adjustments after an early UC Davis goal and for giving the offense its opportunities.

"Our defense is anchoring our team right now," she said. "They're providing the cushion for our offense to find their way, and we know that we'll get the ball back if we do give it up...When you hold teams to this few goals, it puts a lot of pressure on the opposing teams' defense and goalkeepers, and it gave us the freedom to shoot away."

UC Davis got a goal in the fifth minute of the contest, but it would be nearly 20 minutes before the Aggies scored again. Schwaab passed to senior Kirstie Connor for Temple's first goal of the game just a minute and a half after the UC Davis goal, starting a 7-0 run.

Megan Tiernan scored twice on free-position opportunities in the run, while McDermott also got two of her goals including one on a free-position. Senior Nicole Tiernan scored unassisted, and senior Megan Pinkerton got an assist from Schwaab on her goal.

The Aggies scored back-to-back goals to cut the margin to four with just under seven minutes left in the first half, but Schwaab and Nicole Tiernan each scored in the final 2:17 for a 9-3 Temple lead at the break.

Less than a minute and a half into the second half, McDermott completed her first career hat trick. Only a minute later, Megan Tiernan did the same, and then assisted on a goal for junior Morgan Glassford for a 12-3 Temple lead with 22:34 remaining.

The Owls gave up just a single goal in the second half, with senior Jaqi Kakalecik making two saves and finishing with four in the game.

Over the final 17 and a half minutes, Temple scored five unanswered goals. Junior Brooke Williams assisted on a Glassford goal with 10 minutes left, and scored her own with just 15 seconds remaining off an assist from freshman Quinn Benintende. Near the nine-minute mark, junior Anna Frederick scored in the same way she had against La Salle, collecting the ball in a scramble in front of the cage and sending it past goalkeeper Lauren Ali.

Total shots in the game were 31-9 in favor of Temple, and the Owls earned 14 draw controls compared to eight for UC Davis. Glassford was the leader there with six draws.

Temple forced eight of 17 total turnovers by UC Davis, with senior Summer Jaros and Nicole Tiernan each recording two of those.

Next up for the Owls is a game at Lafayette, set for 5 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 27.
