Lacrosse Wins Third Straight in Decisive Fashion, 17-6 at Lafayette

EASTON, Pa. - With a 7-0 run starting just past the midway point of the first half, Temple lacrosse surged ahead of Lafayette and eventually won its first road game of the season 17-6 against the Leopards (2-2). The Owls (3-1) won their third straight game, led by seniors Rachel Schwaab and Megan Tiernan with five points apiece.

Temple has now outscored its last three opponents by a huge margin of 47-12. The Owls have scored 17 goals in back-to-back games, and had seven multiple-goal scorers in Saturday's win at Lafayette.

Tiernan led all players with four goals while also adding an assist, notching her second straight hat trick for the Owls. Schwaab recorded two assists to go with three goals, scoring on all three of her shots. Seniors Kirstie Connor, Brenda McDermott and Nicole Tiernan all scored two goals, as did juniors Anna Frederick and Morgan Glassford. McDermott added two assists for four total points, while Glassford came up with seven of the Owls' 11 draw controls in the victory.

The game was a tight one early on, and the score was tied 5-5 just past the midway point of the first period before the Owls exploded for a 7-0 run to take charge. The first few minutes of the game were a flurry of offense, and the Owls led 3-2 in just the first six minutes.

The run started with a goal by Connor at 12:52, and seven different players scored seven straight goals for the Owls. Glassford picked up a draw control and scored immediately to cap the run with 2:54 left in the half, giving Temple a 12-5 lead.

"Our defense had to figure a few things out in the early going," said Temple head coach Bonnie Rosen, "and we had to get a lot more aggressive defensively. That was one of the big keys to us being able to push forward offensively. Gaining control of the draw was also huge for us. It was 50/50 early on, but Summer Jaros was really able to start directing it towards Morgan, who did a fantastic job. Everyone is starting to figure out their own niches of how they attack, and Brenda and Rachel did such a great job of controlling play to allow us to build the offense."

After a Lafayette goal at 2:18, which would be the Leopards final goal of the game, Glassford scored on a pass from Schwaab with 29 seconds left in the half to put Temple up 13-6 at the break.

Temple led Lafayette scoreless for the entire second half. The Owls' scoring slowed as well, but they primarily controlled the pace of the game. Megan Tiernan's fourth goal was the first of the second half at 26:11, and Nicole Tiernan scored a man-down goal for the Owls less than two minutes later.

Schwaab's final goal game on a pass from senior Megan Pinkerton at 22:16, and only one goal would be scored the rest of the way. That came with 7:29 remaining when junior Brooke Williams fed Frederick for her second goal of the day.

While the offense stole the show for the Owls, the defensive effort was also impressive. Senior Jaqi Kakalecik made eight saves and also picked up three ground balls. The Leopards took just five shots in the second half, with one getting blocked and Kakalecik saving the other four.

Temple will go for win number four in a row at home on Tuesday, March 1 when the Owls face Wagner at 3 p.m.
