Women's Basketball Defeats Cincinnati for Fifth-Straight Win

2.9.16 | Women's Basketball

CINCINNATI -- The Temple women's basketball team led buzzer-to-buzzer against Cincinnati, picking up a 74-49 victory on the road on Tuesday night. The win was the fifth-straight for the Owls, who improve to 16-7 overall, 10-2 in conference play. Cincinnati dips to 7-16 overall, 3-9 in The American.

Temple's defense again came up big, as the Owls held the Bearcats to just eight first-quarter points and didn't look back. Temple finished the game out-shooting and out-rebounding Cincinnati, while turning the ball over just four times, a season-low. The four turnovers by Temple was also a program low, since a three turnover performance against Villanova in 2004.

Sophomore Alliya Butts led four players in double figures for Temple, scoring 22 points and adding five rebounds. Senior Erica Covile notched her third-straight double-double with 11 points and a game-high 15 rebounds. Also reaching double figures were sophomores Tanaya Atkinson and Donnaizha Fountain. Atkinson finished with 16 points and seven rebounds, while Fountain had 13 points. Junior Feyonda Fitzgerald rounded out the box score with seven points and a team-high four assists in the win.

Temple scored the first five points of the game, but Cincinnati narrowed the lead to 7-4 with 6:51 on the clock. From there, Temple used a 9-0 run to go up by 12 (16-4) in the next two minutes of play. A Cincinnati bucket got the lead down to 10, but the Owls closed the quarter on a 10-2 surge to go up 26-8 after one.

The Owls went on a 6-2 run to open the second quarter with a 22-point advantage, at 32-10. After the initial surge, Cincinnati held Temple scoreless while picking up nine-unanswered points to make it a 32-19 game at the break.

Fountain led all players with 11 first-half points, while Butts had nine. Atkinson picked up six points and six rebounds in the first half. For Cincinnati, Ana Owens had points before the break.

Temple rebounded from an offensive lull in the second quarter with a 14-6 run to open the third frame. That surge put the Owls up 21 points, and the lead stayed over 17 points the rest of the way. In the fourth quarter, the Owls used an 11-3 run early to put the game out of reach. Temple went up by as many as 27 and then closed out the 74-49 victory.

The Owls next play on Friday, hosting Houston at 7:00 p.m. on ESPN3. Following the game, the Temple host Parent Child Lay-up Night, where kids ages 14 and under will have the opportunity to make a lay-up on the court.
