PHILADELPHIA -- Temple volleyball will add a talented transfer to the 2016 team, as the Owls welcome Kyra Coundourides. An accomplished setter, Coundourides played her first two years at Virginia Tech.Â
"We're very excited to welcome Kyra to our program," said head coach Bakeer Ganesharatnam. "She's going to be a tremendous asset to us in attaining our goals for this year and next year. We've known her for about five years and her competiveness and her great work ethic will fit within our team culture perfectly."Â
In two seasons at Virginia Tech, Coundourides played in 59 career matches, tallying 956 total assists, 304 digs, and 46 aces. She notched a career-high 30 assists in a match at Duke, and added a career-best four aces against Virginia. In two seasons, Coundourides tallied 20 or more assists in a match on 21 occasions, while also adding seven double-doubles.Â
Off the court, Coundourides was involved in the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, the Student Athlete Advisory Committee, and various community outreach activities. She plans on majoring in Kinesiology at Temple.Â
Originally from Brunswick, Ohio, Coundourides is a four-time All-Ohio honoree and earned First Team All-District honors all four years. She is a former PrepVolleyball Top-100 Senior Ace and earned Under Armour All-America Honorable Mention honors as a senior. On the club level, Coundourides competed for AVC and helped the team to a UVA National Championship Runner-Up and five appearances in the USA Volleyball Junior National Championships.
Coundourides joins a Temple team that most recently finished 24-8 overall with a 15-5 mark in the tough American Athletic Conference. The Owls ended the 2015 season alone in second place in the conference, and have defeated all conference opponents at least once in each of the past two years.Â
"The team has been working very hard this spring and the individual and team progression we've had so far has been one of the best since we've been here," noted Ganesharatnam. "We're looking forward to having everything come together in August."Â
