Lacrosse Cruises Past Saint Joseph's

3.12.16 | Women's Lacrosse

PHILADELPHIA -- Temple lacrosse won its seventh-straight game in dominating fashion, as the Owls topped visiting Saint Joseph's, 16-4, on Saturday afternoon at Geasey Field. Temple improves to 7-1 overall, while the Hawks dip to 1-5.

Temple allowed under five goals for the third time this season, and while the Owls' offense rolled, head coach Bonnie Rosen pointed to the defensive effort as one of the keys to today's victory.

"I was really happy with how we played defensively and I think it's important to note that the defense runs the whole field," she noted. "Any time we don't have the ball, our attackers are defending, our midfielders defend all the way back, and our defenders are there. The defensive effort was outstanding, our patience was really good today."

Twelve different Temple players registered points on the afternoon, as the Owls finished with a 29-13 advantage in shots, including an 18-5 lead in the first half. Senior Kirstie Connor led the way with four goals, while senior Megan Tiernan added a hat trick. Senior Avery Longstaff was the only other multiple goal-scorer in Temple's balanced attack, while senior Brenda McDermott registered three assists on the afternoon.

"We were ready to play and that was one of the things I was the most excited for today, I saw it during warm-ups," added Rosen.  "Offensively, it could be anyone for us. As soon as the offense starts running, it depends on what opens up and who can take advantage of it."

Senior Rachel Schwaab added a goal and an assist while junior Morgan Glassford, senior Nicole Tiernan, sophomores Kira Gensler and Nicole Barretta, and freshmen Amber Lambeth and Quinn Benintende all tallied solo points for the Owls. In goal, senior Jaqi Kakalecik picked up six saves to earn the victory.

Temple scored early and often as Connor hit the back of the net twice and Megan Tiernan scored once as the Owls led 3-1 after just seven minutes of play. Saint Joseph's got a goal at 21:36 to cut the lead to 3-1, but eight-straight Temple scores made it an 11-1 lead at the break. Eight different Temple players scored during the extended run, which set up a running clock heading into the second period.

The Owls' offense did not let up in the second half, as Longstaff and Connor stretched the lead to 13-2 within the first five minutes of the frame. Saint Joseph's came alive, scoring three of the next four goals to make it 14-4, but that was as close as the Hawks got. Temple's Megan Tiernan and Benintende both scored before time expired, setting the final to 16-4 Owls.

Before the game, Temple announced Lily Adkins as an honorary starter for the Owls, as part of the Friends of Jaclyn Foundation. The Friends of Jaclyn Foundation is a non-profit organization whose mission it is to improve the quality of life for children with pediatric brain tumors. In April of 2010, the Owls made their second Friends of Jaclyn adoption when they welcomed Lily and her family as part of the Temple lacrosse program.

Temple returns to action on Wednesday, hosting Delaware on Geasy Field at 3:00 p.m.
