Temple Falls to Iowa in NCAA First Round Overtime Heartbreaker

BROOKLYN, N.Y. - After a thrilling ending to regulation gave Temple men's basketball new life in overtime of the NCAA First Round, Iowa (22-20) handed the Owls a heartbreaking loss with a putback at the buzzer. Temple (21-12) got a game-high 26 points from senior Quenton DeCosey in his final appearance for the Owls, with DeCosey hitting 3-of-3 at the free throw line to tie the game with two seconds left in regulation.
Senior Jaylen Bond was also impressive in his last game, notching his 10th double-double of the season with a game-high 15 rebounds to go with 14 points. Junior Josh Brown put up 16 points, nine boards and five assists for Temple.
Iowa hit a flurry of three-pointers early in the game, forcing Temple to come back from a 12-point deficit in the first half. The Owls again trailed by double digits seven minutes into the second half, and never held a lead in that period. The first tie of the game came with two seconds left when DeCosey made his clutch performance at the stripe.
Jarrod Uthoff scored a team-high 23 points for Iowa, while Peter Jok finished with 16. Jok made his first three treys of the game, but missed his final seven attempts. Adam Woodbury, who scored the game-winning putback in overtime, finished with 10 points.
Both teams were hot from the floor early on, but Iowa's three-point shooting gave the Hawkeyes a big advantage in the first 10 minutes. They hit 5-of-7 to start the game, with Temple hitting 6-of-12 from the field in that stretch to keep it close.
Iowa hit its sixth trey of the half at the 11-minute mark and followed it with a layup for its largest lead of 12, 30-18 with 10:01 on the clock. Still down 12 at 8:41, the Owls came alive for a 13-0 run over close to a 3-minute stretch, and took a 33-32 lead with five minutes left.
Uthoff hit a pair of free throws for Iowa at 1:09 to give the Hawkeyes a three-point lead, but they were almost the only points scored by either team in the final four minutes. Brown broke the drought for Temple with three seconds left, hitting a jumper to send the Owls into halftime down by just a point, 38-37.
After shooting well over 60 percent early in the half, Iowa slipped to 40 percent by the break, hitting just two of its final 14 attempts and missing its last five. The Owls shot 55 percent, getting 12 points from DeCosey in the first half and 10 from Bond.
The Owls were still within a point on a Bond layup early in the second half, but then went cold for as Iowa used an 11-2 run to take a 10-point, 51-41 lead at 13:33. Temple picked up the pace for an 8-2 run to get the deficit back to four points near the midway mark of the half, and the Owls stayed within two to three possessions of the Hawkeyes down the stretch.
Iowa's last field goal of the second half came with 5:08 remaining to give the Hawkeyes an eight-point, 61-53 lead, but Temple still trailed by four with 18 seconds left. DeCosey made a layup at 11 seconds, and Jok missed 1-of-2 free throws to put Temple down just three with eight seconds left. DeCosey was fouled on his long three-point attempt, and made all three including the third after an Iowa timeout.
