PHILADELPHIA -- The Temple men's crew team opened the spring racing season by winning four medals at the 34th Annual Murphy Cup Regatta. The event was hosted by the Owls on the Schuylkill River.Â
"Our men demonstrated a lot of speed and depth today," said Dr. Gavin White, Temple's head coach. "I'm really impressed, they showed a lot of poise and an awful lot of determination. They haven't gotten rattled and showed no signs of being nervous."
Temple grabbed silver medals in both the varsity eight and junior varsity eight races, while taking bronze in the novice eight and lightweight four races. Overall, Owl boats finished fourth or higher in every race contested, advancing to five finals.Â
In varsity eight racing, Temple won its morning heat in 5:56.06, outdistancing Delaware, UNC, La Salle, Penn State, and Franklin & Marshall. In the finals, the Owls nabbed second place in 5:52.50, just over five seconds behind Drexel, and ahead of Virginia, Delaware, Boston College, and Wesleyan.Â
Temple had a similar result in second varsity racing, as the Owls took first in their heat, before taking second in the finals, in 5:56.71. Temple was just 2.62 seconds behind Drexel, finishing ahead of Virginia, St. Joseph's, Bates, and UNC.Â
Temple's novice eight boat also finished with a medal, winning the morning heat, before placing third in the finals in 6:24.06. The Owls were just behind Drexel and Virginia, outpacing Bates, Delaware, and Colgate.Â
The Owls' other medal came in the lightweight four event, where Temple took third in 7:02.27, just 1.23 seconds off the silver medal pace. Fordham won the race, followed by NY Maritime in second. Temple topped La Salle and Fordham's second boat.Â
Elsewhere, Temple's third varsity eight finished just out of the medals, taking fourth in a time of 6:40.90. The Owls finished ahead of URI in the event.
Rounding out the racing action, Temple's varsity four missed the finals by a narrow margin, taking third in their heat. The Owls clocked in at 7:11.06, behind Virginia and Lehigh, but ahead of La Salle, and NY Maritime.Â
