GREENVILLE, S.C. - There is no record in the Temple Golf media guide for best round by an Owls team, but it would be tough to beat Saturday's second round at the Furman Intercollegiate held at the 6,994 par-72 Furman University Golf Course.

One day after shooting a 10-over 298, the Temple Golf team turned in a nine-under 279.  The 19-point turnaround moved the Owls from 17th place to ninth place in the 19-team field.

"It is definitely the best round in my tenure at Temple," said Owls' head coach Brian Quinn, now in his ninth season at the helm. "And I do not recall a better round during my time as a player either.

Quinn, who was a standout player in the late 1980s under John MacDonald, was a part of three Temple NCAA Tournament teams (1987, 1989, 1990).  So if he thinks it may be the best round in school history, it just may well be.

"I am real happy for the kids," he said. "They are working real hard and it is good to see that hard work finally paying off."

Senior Brandon Matthews, an honorable mention All-American last year, led the way with his first sub-70 round of the year, a four-under 68.  Matthews, who has a one-under 143 for the tournament, is tied for 24th overall, one stroke behind his teammate, sophomore Mark Farley, who shot a two-under on the day and sits at two-under 142 for tourney and tied for 19th.

Freshman Trey Wren recorded his best collegiate round, a three-under 69, and is tied for 35th overall with a one-over 145.  Red-shirt freshman John Barone was even par on the day and is tied for 52nd with a three-over 147.   Freshman Gary McCabe rounded out the Owls quintet with an 80 (81-80, 161, t-110).

Georgia State leads the field with a 16-under 560, 17 strokes ahead of the Owls.

Play concludes Sunday.
