Three Record Hat Tricks in 18-3 Lacrosse Win Over Cal
3.26.16 | Women's Lacrosse
PHILADELPHIA - It was domination on both ends of the field for Temple lacrosse (8-2) in the Owls' final non-conference game of the season, as they cruised to an 18-3 win over Cal (3-5) at Geasey Field on Saturday afternoon. Three Owls recorded hat tricks, while seven others also scored for Temple.
The Owls out-shot Cal 35-13, and Temple senior goalkeeper Jaqi Kakalecik made saves on nine of the Golden Bears' shots to hold them to just three goals in the game. The 15-goal differential for the Owls was their biggest in a season that has seen them win five other games by 10 or more goals.
Senior Megan Tiernan was the leader in total points with three goals and an assist. Juniors Anna Frederick and Brooke Williams both notched the first hat tricks of their careers, scoring three goals apiece. Senior Megan Pinkerton added an assist to two goals, and sophomore Nicole Barretta also scored twice for the Owls.
The Owls got 16 draw controls to Cal's six, with junior Morgan Glassford recording a career high in picking up 10 of those draws. Temple also led 11-5 in ground balls, with senior Nicole Tiernan tallying four of those along with two caused turnovers.Â
"Today was a fantastic day," said Temple head coach Bonnie Rosen. "It was the culmination of a great 10 days of working hard to get to today. We had to really battle hard coming off our loss to Delaware to better our game and to handle the letdown of a loss. It took the whole week to get us there. We worked really hard and had a great week of practice. I saw it in our entire team. It was not a surprise to see our team play well today."
It was the Golden Bears who struck first in the contest, scoring in the third minute, but the Owls then rattled off six straight over the next 13 minutes. Senior Rachel Schwaab got the run started, and later assisted on the Owls' fifth goal. Williams scored all three of her goals in that stretch, including the one assisted by Schwaab and another assisted by Pinkerton.
Pinkerton scored Temple's second goal of the game on a pass from senior Avery Longstaff, and later scored again in the first minute of the second half.
Cal scored once more in the first half with 10:47 remaining, but Temple managed five more tallied before halftime for an 11-2 lead at the break. Senior Carly Demato had both a goal and an impressive assist to Frederick in that second run for the Owls, which was capped by a Kira Gensler free-position goal with just two seconds left before halftime.
Temple allowed just one Golden Bear goal in the second half while scoring seven more of its own. Sophomore Toni Yuko notched her first career goal on a pass from junior Krissy Gallivan, and Yuko later returned the favor in passing to Gallivan for the final goal of the game with 3:27 remaining.Â
The Owls now begin BIG EAST play, and will head to #2 Florida for their first conference game on Saturday, April 2 at 1 p.m.
