Women's Gymnastics Hosts Penn & Bridgeport on Senior Day

PHILADELPHIA – With only two regular season meets remaining before the ECAC Championships, the Temple women's gymnastics is set to host its final meet of 2016 in McGonigle Hall. The Owls will welcome the Quakers of Penn and the Purple Knights of Bridgeport on Saturday, March 5 beginning at 1:00 p.m. Saturday's tri-meet will also take time to recognize the teams' four senior Owls following the conclusion of competition.
Last weekend, the Owls competed at two meets and faced a total of eight opponents across the competitions. On Friday, the Owls posted a 191.625 at the Pink Invitational where they placed fourth out of five teams, topping Southern Connecticut for the second time this season.
On Sunday, the Owls took a trip to Ithaca College to participate in the Harriet Marranca Invitational. With a final score of 191.15, the Owls took first overall as a team making their overall record for the weekend 5-3.
As a team, Temple now ranks third in the conference with a team RQS of 191.39. Individually, Briana Odom still sits in the top-ranked spot on floor and is tied for second in the all-around. Also topping the conference standings is Sahara Gipson, who sits in second on vault with an RQS of 9.715, trailing the top spot by only .065.
Overall, six Owls hold top-ten spots in conference rankings on their respective events.
Meeting the Owls for the first time this season, the University of Bridgeport Purple Knights will travel to Philadelphia following a 193.225 team performance at the University of Nebraska. The Knights lead the ECAC Division II conference with an overall team RQS of 194.125. Ajea Hargrave posted the highest event placement for the Knights last weekend, tying for first on floor with a 9.875.
Penn enters the weekend following a fourth place finish at the Ivy League Championships with a 191.05 team score. In the ECAC, the Quakers rank fifth with a team RQS of 190.97. Senior Elyse Shenberger tied for the Ivy League title on bars with a score of 9.85.
This season, the Owls and the Quakers stand at 1-1, with Temple topping Penn at the Lindsey Ferris Invitational 191.375-190.625. At the Rutgers quad meet on Feb. 20, the Quakers logged a win over the Owls 192.40-191.625.
