WEST WINDSOR, N.J. — The Temple women's rowing team wrapped up the two-day Knecht Cup on Mercer Lake on Sunday. The Owls competed in five finals on the day, including a grand final appearance from the novice eight.
Temple raced in three semifinals in the morning, starting with the second varsity eight. That Temple crew finished fourth in an extremely tight race where just 3.1 seconds separated positions one through four. The Owls clocked in at 7:04.47 to earn a spot in the petite finals.
The varsity eight also raced in a morning semifinal, taking third overall. Temple finished in 6:56.95, behind only Tulsa and BC, to advance to the petite final.
In the last semifinal of the day, Temple's novice eight secured it's spot in the grand finals, with a second place finish. Temple turned in a time of 7:20.55, just behind Alabama, to advance.
The Owls participed in five finals, one grand and four petite in the afternoon. Highlighting the action was the novice eight boat that finished sixth in the grand final, clocking in at 7:18.29.
The second varsity eight finished third in a tightly contested petite final. Fordham won the race, followed by Drexel and Temple, as only 2.02 seconds separated first, second, and third.
Elsewhere, the varsity four finished fourth in the petite final (7:47.47), while the varsity eight (6:53.16) and the novice four (8:21.65) each notched fifth place finishes in their respective petite finals.
"While we gained valuable race experience, ultimately we did not perform to the level of our expectations, particularly in the final races of the weekend," said head coach Rebecca Smith Gyzybowski. "This is disappointing but also motivating.Thankfully there is a good amount of racing left in the season and we have more speed to find."
Temple is back in action next weekend at the Kerr Cup, hosted by Drexel on the Schuylkill River.
