Women's Soccer Wins Inaugural Philly Soccer Six Championship

4.17.16 | Women's Soccer

PHILADELPHIA - The Temple University women's soccer team finished their spring schedule by bringing home the inaugural Philly Soccer Six championship. At the event, hosted by the University of Penn, the Owls were drawn to face the Quakers and Drexel University.

In the first game of the day, the Owls faced off against the Quakers in a game that ended in a 0-0 tie. Temple then moved on to face Drexel, where sophomore Elana Falcone scored the only goal to give the Owls a 1-0 win over the Dragons and moved the Owls onto the championship game where they faced LaSalle.

Both teams had ample opportunities to score, but the game ended in a 0-0 tie and the Philly Soccer Six title was decided in a penalty kick shootout. Freshman goalkeeper Jordan Nash scored the first PK for Temple, before saving the first of La Salle's kicks. Falcone, redshirt-sophomore Kayla Cunningham and freshman Juliet Esposito all scored on their attempts, but the Explorers responded by scoring three straight kicks.

Sophomore Gabriella McKeown took the final kick for the Owls, sending it behind the goalie and securing the win for the Owls. Falcone and Nash were named to the Philly Six All-Tournament team, while junior Elaine Byerley was named MVP of the tournament.

The spring schedule was important to head coach Seamus O'Connor and he was pleased with the results and the competition his team faced.

"This was a great way for us to end a very tough spring season.  We were all so saddened with the injuries we picked up this spring, but I was so amazed by the attitude of these players.  They kept their focus on getting better in every game and we did that this spring," said O'Connor.  "The Philly Soccer Six is a very important tournament to us because of how much respect we have for the other programs in the city.  It was such a great event to see so many amazing female athletes all in the one location.  Every game today was so close and any of the six teams could have won the championship."
