Temple Tennis Seeded Seventh in American Athletic Conference Tournaments

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Temple University men's and women's tennis teams will head to the American Athletic Conference Championship as the seventh seeds, the conference announced Monday. The women's tournament will be held April 20-23 and the men's championship will begin April 21 and conclude April 24 Both tournaments will be played at the Dunavant Wellford Tennis Center at the Memphis University School in Memphis, Tenn.
 
The women's team posted a 12-4 record this season, going 1-1 in conference play. The Owls picked up a 4-3 win over East Carolina, but fell to Cincinnati by the same score. The women will face off against the Bearcats again in the opening round of the conference tournament as the #7/#10 matchup on Wednesday at 1:00 p.m. ET/Noon CT. Last season, the two teams met in the opener of the tournament, with the Owls taking a 4-3 victory thanks to sophomore Yana Khon's 7-6, 7-5 victory at the fifth flight.

Khon (15-7) led the team with a 14-2 dual record, going 7-0 at the second flight and 9-1 in her last 10 matches. Junior Mariana Bedon (14-8) finished with a career-high 13-3 dual record, going 9-2 at the sixth flight, while classmate Anais Nussaume (12-8) finished with an 11-4 record, mainly at the third flight. Senior Minami Okajima (13-7) played all across the board, finishing with an 11-3 dual record, while last year's Co-Freshmen of the Year Alina Abdurakhimova (13-7) went 10-4 at the first flight. Junior Dina Karina (13-4) went 10-1, mainly at the fourth and fifth flights, while sophomore Monet Stuckey-Willis posted a 6-3 dual record.

In doubles, Khon and Nussaume went 4-0, while Abdurakhimova and Okajima went 3-0. Karina and Stuckey-Willis posted an identical record at the first flight. Bedon and Okajima went 4-0 at the third flight earlier in the season.
 
On the men's side, the team has tied the program's best record at 20-5, picking up conference wins against East Carolina and UConn. The men will face off against No. 2 Tulsa on Friday at 10:00 a.m. ET/9:00 a.m. CT.

This season was one of the best for Temple, with all six primary players posting double-digit victories in dual play. Freshman Artem Kapshuk (22-6) leads the team with an 18-4 dual record, going 12-1 at the second flight, while classmate Uladzimir Dorash (22-8) is 16-5, mostly at the third flight and Florian Mayer is 12-8 in dual play. Seniors also led the way for the Owls, with Nicolas Paulus (17-14) going 15-8 in dual action and picking up his 69th career victory, which ties him for second in Temple history. Santiago Canete (18-10) was 13-6 in dual play, with a 9-5 record at the first flight, while classmate Hicham Belkssir (19-7) went 14-4, mainly at the fifth flight.

In doubles, Dorash and Mayer lead the team with a 15-4 record, going 7-1 at the second flight, while Belkssir and junior Vineet Naran were 12-7 overall with an impressive 11-6 record at the number one position. Canete and Kapshuk rounded out the doubles play, going 7-4 overall.

The women's semifinal matches will be held on Friday at 4 p.m. ET/3 p.m. CT, with the championship final taking place Saturday at 2 p.m. ET/1 p.m. CT.
 
The men's semifinals will be played on Saturday at 10 a.m. ET/9 a.m. CT, with the championship match beginning at 11 a.m. ET/10 a.m. CT on Sunday.
