PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – Despite the soggy conditions, the Temple men's tennis team was able to squeeze a win out of the visiting Duquesne University Dukes, 5-2 on Saturday afternoon at TU Pavilion. The Owls move to 17-5 overall on the season.
Duquesne was able to pick up the first doubles win, as Tim Kane and Harry Walshe defeated Santiago Canete at the third flight, 6-3. Temple would bounce back as Hicham Belkssir and Vineet Naran took down Corey Robinson and Dimitris Stavropoulos 6-3 at the first flight. The Owls then clinched the point after Florian Mayer and Uladzimir Dorash posted a 6-3 victory over Adam Blasinsky and Chris Corrao at the second flight.
The Dukes would tie things up at 1-1 after Robinson defeated Kapshuk, 6-3, 6-1 at the first flight of singles play. Canete would bump the Owls up a point, taking down Stavropoulo at the second spot, 6-3, 6-4. Nicolas Paulaus picked up a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Drew Akins at the fourth flight before Dorash clinched the match with a 7-6 (5), 1-6, 7-5 win at the third spot over Blasinsky.
The Owls picked up another point with a 6-1, 6-4 win at the sixth flight from Belkssir, while the Dukes' second point came off a 6-3, 6-4 fifth-flight victory from Walshe over Mayer.
"It was a really strong performance from the guys today, especially our three seniors [Canete, Paulus and Belkssir]," said head coach Steve Mauro. "All three of them really picked up the pace today and had great sets during the match."
The Owls will remain home from an April 9 match against Hampton at 12:30 p.m.
