PHILADELPHIA -- The Temple women's rowing team faced tough competiton, hosting Navy and Delaware on the Schuylkill River on Saturday. The event marked the final regular season races for the Owls.
"Navy is a strong, deep team and we always welcome the opportunity line up with them and today was a good late-season test," said head coach Rebecca Smith Grzybowski. "Our novices posted up a solid win in the 3V8 race which is always great. On the varsity level we put together some strong races in every boat class, but also identified a few areas where we can continue to improve in these last few weeks. Now we look forward to finishing up exams and turning our full attention toward conference championship preparations."
Temple finished first or second between in each race contested, most of which featured all three teams. The Owls' novice eight boat led the way, winning the third varsity eight race, clocking in at 7:03.51. Navy took second in 7:08.51, followed by Delaware's novice eight (7:09.19) and the Blue Hens' third varsity (7:16.14).
The Owls' varsity eight took second to navy in their race, as the Midshipmen recorded a time of 6:37.05 to Temple's 6:43.98. The second varsity eight had an even closer race, as Navy (6:54.55) was under four seconds ahead of the Owls (6:58.31).
Navy won all three fours races, with the closest one coming in the first varsity race. Navy topped the field in 7:30.19, followed by Temple (7:39.98) and Delaware (7:47.73).
In the second varsity four, it was Navy (7:37.73), Temple (7:50.99), and Delaware (8:10.76). Wrapping up the action with a third varsity four event, Navy (7:52.75) took it, with Temple (8:02.74) and Navy's 4V4 (8:24.16) trailing.
Temple is back in action competing at the 2016 American Athletic Conference Rowing Championships. The event will take place on May 14 at Sacramento State.
