WEST WINDSOR, N.J. — Five Temple boats advanced to semifinals, as the Owls' women's rowing team opened day one action at the 2016 Knecht Cup on Mercer Lake.
"Conditions got increasingly challenging throughout the day, but we stayed focused, raced hard, and executed well," noted head coach Rebecca Smith Grzybowski. "We are looking forward to some more fast racing (and some sun!) tomorrow."
The Owls competed in six events on the morning, as heat racing kicked off with fast Temple crews. The novice eight boat led the pack with a win in their heat, tallying a time of 7:51.96. The Owls beat Wisconsin, Drexel, Villanova, and MIT to advance to Sunday's semifinals.
Temple's varsity eight and varsity four both took second in their heats to earn spots in the semis. The varsity eight clocked in at 7:35.18, behind Kansas by just 1.65 seconds. The varsity four notched a second-place time of 8:14.17 in its heat, also advanced to the semifinals.
The Owls' second varsity eight and novice four boats also made it through the heats, as each finished third in their first races. The second varsity recorded a time of 7:38.66 to advance to the semifinals, while the novice four notched a time of 9:06.75, also advancing to the semifinals.
Temple's second varsity four was just two spots away from a semifinals berth, clocking in a 9:03.41, to take fifth.
