LECANTO, Fla. - Â Temple senior Brandon Matthews showed his All-American form Sunday, carding a three-under 69 to tie for the lead following the first round at the American Athletic Conference Championship at Black Diamond Ranch.
Matthews, who finished in the Top 10 at The American Championship as a sophomore (t-4th), is looking to cap a brilliant Temple career that includes a school-record-tying eight individual titles. He is tied with East Carolina's Wesley Cooper. Three golfers are one stroke back and tied for third.
"Brandon played a solid round of golf and has put himself in a good positon,' said Temple head coach Brian Quinn. "Now he just has to take it one day at a time."
The DuPont, Pa, native made an eagle three on the 18th hole to finish his front nine at one-under. He then birdied the fifth and ninth holes, both par 5s, to secure his share of the lead.
As a team Temple is ninth (304), two shots behind eighth place UConn (302). USF owns the lead after day one with a 285 followed by East Carolina, two strokes back at 287.Â
Sophomore Mark Farley turned in a solid three-over 75 to tie for 25th overall. Freshman Gary McCabe carded a 79 to tie for 40th while freshman Trey Wren (81/44th) and redshirt freshman John Barone (82/45th) rounded out the Owls' quintet.
"We have a very talented young group of kids who tried a little too hard today," said Quinn "I look forward to a great day of golf from them tomorrow."
Round two on the par-72, 7,025-yard Quarry Course will begin at 8 a.m. ET Monday with the final round being held Tuesday.
