Six Owl Boats Advance on Day One of Dad Vail Regatta
5.13.16 | Men's Crew
PHILADELPHIA — Six Temple boats advanced to the semifinals of the 2016 Dad Vail Regatta after a successful day one of competition at the famed Schuylkill River event. The Owls had four heat winners overall, setting the team up for a fast final day of competition tomorrow.
Temple's varsity eight boat got the day off to a good start, as the Owls recorded a time of 5:54.771 to earn a spot in the semis. Temple out-paced Army, Marist, Pitt, and UMass-Lowell in the heat, while their time stood as the fastest of all varsity eight crews.
The Owls' lightweight four, who won the event in 2015, also grabbed a heat victory. Temple finished first in 7:07.28, to top Lafayette, Mercyhurst, Dayton, Minnesota, and Duke, to earn a semifinal place.
Temple's second varsity eight also advanced to the semifinals following the morning heats. The Owls took second in 6:14.706, just behind Virginia (6:13.421), while taking down La Salle and Pittsburgh in the event.
In freshman racing, both Temple boats won their heats to advance to the semifinals. The eight took their heat in a time of 6:40.149, ahead of Minnesota, Virginia, Michigan State, and Penn State. In fours racing, the Owls notched a 10-second victory, coming in at 7:12.367. Temple defeated Fordham, Grand Valley State, Stetson, Penn State, and La Salle.
The Owls also had a freshman compete and advance in the singles, as Brendan Mason was third in his heat. The rookie covered the course in 8:27.296, finishing ahead of Virginia and Clarkson in the event.
Temple had just one boat fail to qualify, the varsity four. That event was run in a time trial, rather than heats, with the Owl boat finishing in 6:29.139 to rank 24th out of 38 boats.
Action continues tomorrow with semifinals and finals for Temple running from 7:12 a.m. to 1:32 p.m.
